Auto Levelling HIDs

Hello,

so, i have xenons, and they are supposed to be autolevelling.

Now, with the changes to the MOT rules this year, they have to be working else its a failure

Lighting
Products on the lens or light source that obviously reduce the light's intensity or change its colour will become a reason for failure – applies to front/rear position lamps, registration plate lamps, stop lamps, rear fog and direction indicators,

Headlight requirements are updated to take account of the particular characteristics of High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps.

HID headlights can cause dazzle if they are dirty or aimed too high so car manufacturers must fit headlamp cleaning and levelling systems. Where HID or LED dipped beam headlamps are fitted the tester will switch on the headlamps and check the operation of any headlamp levelling and cleaning devices fitted.

The car will fail if a headlamp levelling or cleaning device is inoperative or otherwise obviously defective.

If a headlamp bulb is not seated correctly the resulting beam pattern will be indistinct and this will result in a test fail.

Am i right in saying that when the lights first ignite, they are supposed to move up and down then level. This has never happened to my car, not once. so i'm getting a bit worried.

where is the best place to start diagnosing this?

thanks!

Rajiv

Xenons have suspension mounted sensors for auto levelling. This might be the best place to start, but I suspect that it might a job best left for an indy, unless you're ultra confident at DIY

When i was getting the exhaust done, i took a look at the sensors.

They seems to be fully intact, wires plugged in.

Might have to take it to an Indy to get it looked at properly.
Do you know if there is a specific fuse that controls it?

Not sure if there's a specific fuse, as it might simply form part of the Xenon circuit

Can't see a specific item for it on the fuse list

dumb question - how the hell do you get to the fuse box?

i seem to be doing something stupid. removed the closing strut from the side of the glove box.....and then?

Mine has two inch square plastic "buttons" on the roof of the glovebox/underside of the dash towards the edges. You push these in and the glovebox drops down exposing the fuses. I can try to get pics if you can't find them.

There are two 'buttons' for want of a better expression, that you push firmly, then the box opens past its normal opening point, and drops down fully they are located on the back wall / ceiling of the glove box

Don't like the bit about the washers... as I've taken my fuse out to stop all the splashes over my paintword.

WDS is a little vague on this, but looks like fuses 23 & 58 are involved. Pretty basic circuit, Power->Controller->Sensors & motors.

There's actually two sensors, the ride height on the rear suspension, and a 'load sensor' on the front, both look like they're on the right/nearside.

will be interesting for folks that have fitted aftermarket HIDs......

Yep. But on the bright side, several thousand chavs and their nasty misaligned crap buckets will be failing an MOT
