Auto headlights gone crazy

I have the automatic headlight feature.

Sometimes I will get in my car after work and the lights go on... they stay on until I get home (talking bright sunshine outside, here!)... Switch off the car and switch back on and the lights stay off. It's always when I leave work... I can only imagine it's something to do with the car being in the shade or something?... Weird, because I always thought it continuously sensed.

I did have the windscreen changed a while back because there was a bubble in the rain sensor... wonder if it could be linked?

Did you get a proper screen or one of those autoglass jobbies? (with the non-straight, bubbly windscreens)

It went into BMW... I asked them to replace it before the warranty ran out... so it "should" have been done properly

How sensitive has your level been set through the programming? I reduced my sensitivity (think there are 3 levels). That is a dealer job by the way.

No idea... is it a dealer job to find out too, or is there some magic I can do to find out?

yes, it is on the programmable settings so dealer only.

In 2004, I hooked up my Z to the dealer computer and did it myself whilst it was being prepped for delivery. I programmed the settings I wanted myself, no more then 2 minutes work in total (computer is touch screen and the screen is like the lists of options that have been published before).

However, I know that your dealer relation is not the best so you might want to call around ...

I have the same issue.

Start car in garage light come on, reverse car, bright sunshine lights stay on, but if is dull/overcast they go out.

Likewise driving home bright sunshine most of the time they switch on, but again dull/overcast no lights.

original screen, no logic to it.

I had that on the X5. Complained to the dealer and they came up with some story about the intensity of the light. I.e, you might have "late evening" sun which is actually a different wavelength and the sensor will trigger with it. A cloudy day however is quite light intensive so thereofre the sensor does not go off.
