Auto gear knob swap

Has anyone ever replaced the standard gear knob on an auto?
Is it easy to do?
What's the best thing to replace it with?

Mine's a bit worn and chipped and I'm considering my options.

Yes mate I did it, used the bmw performance auto knob from a 1 series ..think it was a straight swap..either that or I just swapped over the stalk inside

Is it as simple as it appears? Into neutral, pull up like a manual knob and replace?

It is indeed mate..as long as you get one with the correct stalk, although you can interchange those with a little fiddling

Excellent news. Thank you.
Trying to resurrect the one I have, but if that fails then I know it can be done.

Plus, by the time I get round to it [ref]bigwinn[/ref] will have done six and posted a comprehensive write up

Back when my car had an auto box it had a really bad shifter on it… I picked up a shifter from an E46 only to find the inner shaft was too long. After a bit of modifying I got it to fit and work as expected

I had it covered in alcantara and the middle was painted gloss black to match the rest of the piano black trim

Easy to swap as others have posted above
