Auto box to be allowed to downshift at a higher rpm.

Hi,

I've had my Z4 coupe for 3 years (as of yesterday in fact). It's an 3.0 Si Semi Auto. I love it and I love the semi auto paddle shifters - except for one thing. It is great for up-shifts, but not for down-shifts. The problem I have with it is that from 6th to fifth I have to be, (roughly), under 5,000 rpm, from 5th to 4th under 4,000 rpm, from 4th to 3rd under 3,000 rpm, from 3rd to 2cnd under 2,500 rpm and from 2cnd to 1st under 1,000 rpm (if memory serves me correctly).

Is there a way of re-programming this aspect so that I can choose to downshift to the next gear as long as it's under say 6,000 rpm?

I recently drove a Lamborghini Gallardo with a similar paddle shift function. That had no issue in banging down to the next gear with the V10 screaming above 7,000 rpm!!

Any ideas would be massively helpful.

I would not call automatic gearbox in 3.0si as "semi-auto". SMG/SSG are semi-auto. Gallardo is completely different animinal.

I think the ECU limits the downshift rpm to protect the engine. If it allows you to downshift from 6th to 5th at 6,000 rpm, the rpm will go over 7,000 after the gearchange (over the engine limit). But the rpm you stated above look strange (from 5th to 4th, from 4th to 3rd, etc).

Hi ksher,

I think the rpm above isn't exact. To be honest I guessed it from what I could remember. I understand the point of protecting the engine, but it seems a little over protected for the lower-gears. I'll go for a drive later and get exact figures.

Thanks ksher.
