Auto box swap ?

First off, is the e86 auto box on a 2.5 a 6 speed? Does anyone know if it would be a straight swap for a 5speed e85 box? Is there an ecu that controls it all and would that need changing also? Any info would be grateful as this may be my winter project.

Hi, think there's a mistake somewhere as bmw never produced a 2.5 e86?

I assume he means th e85. My question is why would you want to go from 6 speed to 5? I can understand the other way but not that way?
 
Yeh sorry guys, I want to put a facelift gearbox (6speed) into my pre facelift e85 (5speed) Thought the facelifts were called e86? My bad.
 
It's much more involved than simply switching the box. Electronics, torque converter, rear diff are all different between the cars and you would need to check the bolt pattern of the boxes are the same etc.

All in all its far easier and cheaper to sell and buy a post facelift car.
