Auto Box - Any good?

I have the details on my home computer not with me but yes there is different ratios/diffs right across the range. The only real exception is the 6 speed manual, it's ratios are the same across all 3.0/30si applications it's just the diff that changes with the 3.0i pre having the longest and 3.0si coupe the shortest. The 3.0si roadster is in between the too. The m uses the same box and basically the same ratios. To account for its different tyre sizes it uses a shorter diff than the the 3.0si coupe. But because of the tyres it basically has the same overall gearing. A 2.5 pre face-lift auto uses basically the same diff ratio as a m. So if your running m tyre sizes for that bit extra ride quality you can match up the 3.0si coupe/M gearing useing one of these. I did this mod.

 excellent thanks. I had always been curious about what stock side by side comparison would be in loosing a gear with 5 speed auto vs 6speed manual. My final drive change has thrown a major variance to it all so didn’t want to throw in that variable right away in this discussion but I went to a 4.10:1 lsd and tires are 255/35/18 square stance

Did you change the diff ratio on a manual or an auto? I did wonder if doing it on an auto might upset the software as the revs/speeds wouldn't be what it would expect to be seeing in each gear. I read a few reports online the SMG owners had this issue.

The Auto is nice, very smooth my friends has a e85 3.0 auto but mines the manual, it is slower as its old style torque converter but if i used mine for commuting id have gotten one, but mines just for fun so :driving:

What took me by surprise was, on holiday in Germany in the first 3.0l Auto and cruising around 90/100mph, I accelerated hard and the thing changed down, then up when the speeds increased. I would guess in a manual 'box none of us would contemplate a gear change?

I would if I wanted to accelerate really quickly - 6th to 4th and nail it!

That's why you get 6 to choose from.

I have the 6-speed auto in my 3.0 Si and agree with the sentiments here; great to use round town but when you need it, you have full control with the paddles. Be surprised if any modern 'sports' car has a manual box these days; expect they would they would now mirror the auto/ semi-auto model these days.

Me too - I do two taps on the paddles down to fourth before I overtake also - 5th simply doesn't cut it :D

It's an auto, in short, both non sport ecu shifting and sport mode driver shifting besides the shorter time in each gear it behaves just as stock, I did the diff upgrade at the same time I did my ess vt1 addition and I had some meaning behind the madness on pairing the two how I did but it's kind of off topic and hate to hijack lol.

Not sure about UK/Euro market but state side when I was looking at a F-type manuals are only available up to the S trim, the R and SVR are auto box only. There for sure are plenty other new modern "sports cars" that are going auto box only. A sign of change of the times. I'll take an auto box any day in our cars when you compare it to an auto '79 corvette I had to test drive last year.

I am curious as to why it is necessary to manually change down doesn't any one use Kickdown which does the job for you and quicker.

Most of the time I just use kickdown - the paddles sometimes- just depends on the mood and location.

Cruising at 100k's a drop to 4th puts it at around 4k'ish RPM which is around the third cam power-band so it's good, smooth acceleration from there and no delay. I find the kickdown often needs the pedal to the floor and results in down-change to third which is closer to 5.5 RPM. You get a kickdown delay and a very short burst of power as it pings to the redline then changes to 4th.

Smoother and its fun to use the paddles :)
