Australian Z4 E89 - Convertible/Bootlid issues

Hi all,

A friend has an LL52, May 2012 Z4 28i.
The other day he came around because his convertible top was not functioning correctly. The button just flashes red and the heads up display on the dash says it's unable to determine the roof position. (The roof is currently up, and locked). Figured it was probably one of the microswitches after a bit of research, and he went on his way. Wasn't something we could fix for him in our driveway with no spare parts of course.
But, now his bootlid won't open. Keyfob, badge, or button by the drivers legs. None of them will open the boot.

The vehicle does not have the USDM emergency release inside the boot (Not that it would be very easy to access anyway!)

All I've managed to find is the below from one of the BMW manuals:

Emergency Opening of Rear Lid
As there is no lock cylinder and Bowden cable assembly, the rear lid cannot be released
in the event of the rear lid lock being defective. At the same time, movement of the
retractable hardtop is inhibited by the unknown status of the rear lid.
The lid can be opened if the Bowden cable (emergency glow in the dark) handle can be
reached from the through load compartment.
The rear lid can also be forced to open by using the diagnostic tester. The rear lid activation via the JBE component activation function. This activation request ignores all status
that would typically inhibit rear lid operation such as top position.

Emergency Actuation of the Retractable Hardtop
An emergency actuation facility for releasing the retractable hardtop by the customer is
not possible. Emergency actuation is, however, possible in the service workshop. The
emergency actuation procedure is described in detail in the repair instructions.

So, is he really that far up sh*t creek? I've always disliked euros, but this just takes the cake. Incredible engineering.

Source of this issue most probably is #3:

 Perfect statement to request European support.
You are talking about a 10 year old car that never got any maintenance on the complex roof mechanism. :voodoo:

Cheers, I'll have a looksee at that link, much appreciated.

I admit, I am biased against the car. I drive 25+ year old Jap 4 bangers, which while hardly comparable in luxury features, at least I can open the bootlid regardless of what my car's computer/electronics want me to do :D
It just seems illogical to design a system where a simple microswitch failure can completely lock you out of the boot. How much additional cost would it have been for them to have a cable by the drivers seat, or even just a key lock under the BMW badge?

I agree regarding the additional costs even for some other weaknesses, we E89ers are suffering on 15 years after these detail decisions were taken by the BMW engineers here in Munich.

But, on a market economy view, each of these decisions were correct, as nobody promised an E89 lasting for eternity.

Let's talk again about the E89 quality in 10 years, when the current "smartphone" cars of all the manufacturers worldwide get into their middle ages. :driving:

Reason why i did a boot mod release.
Been useful twice when working on faults being locked out of boot.

Somewhere on forum a way is shown pulling a plug on a module.
