Audio upgrades

Hiya guys

So I believe my e89 has just the basic sound system. It has the bmw professional headunit with aux in and bluetooth calls. No tweeters behind the the mirror caps. So I'm guessing this is just the 6 speaker setup with no amp? So door, floor and rear speakers.

I have noticed the passenger side speaker seems to cut in and out at random and also the hole system sounds terrible some days and ok on other days.

So currently looking into my options.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram on how the 6 speaker system is wired? I believe the floor speakers are just bridged toghter is this correct?

What I would be looking to do is add a small 4 channel amplifier in the boot location. Running new cables from behind the headunit to the amp and then back to the standard wiring for the speaker's.

I already have a set of focal tweeters with crossovers and 6.5 inch mid speackers from my previous car. Which would work in the tweeter location and the floor location then would just need to find some good 4 inch speackers for the door.

Has any one else upgraded there 6 speaker system and what route did you go.

Cheers leigh

Looking at TIS info it would appear its another strange wiring system!

https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e89-z4-sdrive20i-roa/wiring-functional-info/body/audio-video-telephone-navigation-most-ring/sound-output/stereo-speaker-system/2dTsrUXu

So yes it six speakers coming off the 4 channels of the head unit..

Rear speakers behind the shoulder of the seats are driven by one channel each..

The front door speaker and the rear subwoofer are driven off another channel!

So it appears there are no channels driving no speakers in the footwells.

It must sound s**t!

Personally, if you are adept then the 4 channel amp would be best, IMHO driving a woofer in the footwell and door speaker and tweeter and the other channel driving the rear speakers OR the sub-woofers..

The other option is to drive the rear speakers direct from the head unit, the amp the subwoofers and woofers and the front speakers /tweeters direct from the other channels..

Your issue amonsgt mnay will be the front/rear balance plus possible phase effects from the speakers causing unpleasant interactions..

Anyway that's a view!

Cheers for that mate just what I needed.

Will probs just go with amplifying all the front and then do the rears at some point and maybe add a small under seat sub as well.

Has any one coded there professional hu to the hifi system so it can be used for rca connections from speackers?

Been looking into it on the e90 forums and seems this is what people do or use a in line converter? But I believe the basic system sends a boosted eq signal to compensate for lack of stock tweeters.

AFAIK any signal processing is done in the off board amp and the ASD units..I assume the 6 speaker unit relies on the ASD for its amplification ..

On the 6 speacker basic system the headunit does all the processing and passes this down the speackers. But people have said using this is not great as it's already been processed via the headunit and passing this to an amplifer is not great.

I do have a small pioneer amp with high speacker inputs but dont think it will provide enough power.

I have brought the herts 3 way component speacker setup. Going to be a pain to run all new speacker cables but will be the best way as they each speacker will have it's own wires.

There are 4 versions of the 6 speaker unit fitted to the E89 , two without ASD and two with. You can find if you have ASD fitted as it sits in the rear luggage comparment on the LHS rear bulkhead...if you has an amp it would sit on the RHS rear bulkhead..

If you do have ASD then you need to bear in mind that the ASD unit commands the radio on..so if you simply remove it the radio stops..

It would be unusal to have a generic head unit do frequency tailoring as each car body has different accoustics, thats why the ASP and DSP amps can be loaded with different programs..

Keeping the original head unit, I replaced the door and shoulder speakers, and replaced the kick panel woofers with Kicker subs driven by a kicker amp. The sound system is now top notch - here's info on the build: https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=115607&p=1661384&hilit=Stereo#p1661384

Cheese for the help guys

Have now got my amp mounted in the boot, crossovers mounted where factory sub would go, all wiring run down to foot wells and hidden,

Next two issues I face.

Getting the new speaker wire into the doors.

Finding a way of fitting my mid range speakers as even tho they are 4 inch they are regular speakers and have 4 mounting tabs, does any one make adaptors for the e89? It am I going have get creative and make my own?
