Audio Upgrade - Options?

also.. on the point of subs in the boot.. I tried that, and just found the quality of sound passthro from the boot to the cab in a ROADSTER was pretty crap.

luckily, I already had the carver subs behind the seats, and THANKFULLY stuck with them.. but if I didn't have them, I'd seriously consider installing subs there rather than in the boot to ensure I actually got some quality for the money.

just my £0.02 on that matter :)

I assume you DONT have carver / dsp / subs?

sk93, the main purpose of the bit10 will allow Sam to tune his system to fully take advantage of the equipment fitted.

For instance there is more control on the eq curve than the simple settings that come with the oem unit. The bit10 also is able to defeat the eq curve that would come out of the car

Secondly there is the option for crossovers. Most crossovers on amplifiers are a rough approximation when set with the scales. O-scopes and such would therefore be needed to set them accurately...in short, easier to configure particularly if wanting to run active.

Thirdly, there is the option for time alignment. Arguments for and against in a convertible are there, but with the controller, there is the option to have different presets, one with ta and one without.

Lastly there is the option for additional inputs, such as an Alpine ezi-dab / pure highway 300di.

Yes the bit10 isn't cheap, but given the equipment being used by Sam, I would say it's the best way (aside from changing the stereo) to make the most out of the equipment.

Sam, if you disconnect your front footwell speakers, you will lose the majority of your midbass from the front stage and run the risk of the system sounding too boomy as you would then need the sub to play midbass frequencies as well.

NeilP, Is there an EQ curve coming out of the headunit on pre-amp?
(I was pretty sure that on the battered and bruised RTA we were using, it looked pretty much flat)

in regards to the second point, I know what you're saying, but aren't we going into higher territory than is actually required?
For example, the compo's mentioned above come with passive x-o's, and have a range from 55Hz up.
setting the amps "hp filter" to 55Hz isn't hard and whilst you're right about it not being EXACTLY 55Hz, I can't believe it'd be so far out that you'd actually notice/care?

I can't argue with what you say about point 3, but again it boils down to whether or not we're talking perfection.

final point is a good one, but I'd counter it with DICE mediabridge ;)

and I think that's the crux of my concerns..

Whilst Sam in this case is spending some money (from what I can tell, about a grand?) on audio components, that's still not "high-end" audio.
Don't get me wrong, it's excellent stuff, will produce a fantastic sound and well worth having, but it's not a set of Focal Elite's..

Do you honestly believe (and I'm serious about knowing, not trying to sound condescending, etc) having a DSP in place will really make that much of a difference to the sound quality, or is it only something an audiophile with a tuned ear would really notice/appreciate?

basically - is £280 really worth it?

I'm not sure re the eq from the factory stereo, but (assumed knowledge here) that at speed, the eq curve changes to counter road noise and at volume, low frequencies are cut to prevent distortion.

Sure the equipment isn't on the silly side of car audio in terms of price/quality, but given what has been spent so far, to me, it seems logical to fit a processor and really exploit what there is installed.

I do think that it's something that a tuned ear/audiophile would appreciate, but given that Sam came with the intention of specifically wanting a front stage using Morel equipment, especially in the UK, it seems like a logical suggestion.

Also fwiw, the Bit10 accepts both high and low level.

Well...

My Morel Virtus 4" components are with parcel force - waiting for the £50 customs charge..

He declared it as a gift, however insured it for £200 (customs uses this amount to charge me)

The alpine amp will be here on the 23 from the states...

Missed out on the cleansweep...not got any funds to buy one so in deep thoughts..
