Audio system recognition

Is there a visual way of identifying which Audio system is fitted to an E89? I mean without taking panels off to see if any speakers are behind them, can it be done from the head unit or sat nav display? Does the inclusion of DAB or Nav aid in identifying which grade of audio is fitted?

Firstly, look in the “tweeter” pods with a torch. You should either see nothing or a tweeter.

If nothing you have the 6 speaker setup.

If you can see a tweeter the look between the 2 seat. Top centre, is this a blank or do you have a centre speaker girl?

Do you have subs behind the seats?

Cheers for that, so tweeters mean that it’s above basic, central speaker between seats means business and subs mean professional?

Almost! See my diagram above. The centre speakers in the middle of the seats would mean top end.

I have pro nav and basic audio. Who orders pro nav and keeps standard audio!

So, nav means nothing (on my 2011 car at least).

Same! I was fuming when I found out as I was sold the car believing it had the upgraded sound system.

When I started to investigate as it sounded terrible I realised I had the standard setup.

I’ve added tweeters, upgraded the door speakers and the rear speakers but it’s still not great.

I need to fit an amp but it’s just beyond my diy patience level so I’ll book it in soon!

The "standard" setup is without the USB and Bluetooth which is what I had when I bought mine.
Since then I have added the tweters and an OEM headunit that has USB control and Bluetooth built into the head unit. This has made a massive difference with the sound quality in the car. Obviously you need to also add the USB/AUX socket in place of the AUX one and you need the microphone and steering column upper shroud to fit the microphone and a couple of extra cables for both. All in around the £300 + a bit of coding. If anyone is interested then I can send you all the info you need including the full "how to code" instructions  :driving:

When you added the tweeters etc, did you need to do any re-coding?

Nope

Actually yes, you should recode if going from no tweeters to tweeters.

The base system has boosted treble and different equaliser settings to work best with the setup.

When you ad tweeters the sound opens up but becomes quite harsh.

See my thread here - Page 2 covers coding. https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=105114

Made quite a big difference for me.

That's a nice manual Nick on identifying components of the audio system but I see nothing on coding :( am I missing something?
