Audio system problem

Hey guys,

I have the 10 speaker (non-carver) sound system in my car. After letting my friend drive it and sitting in the passenger seat I've realised the passenger tweeter and mid-range speaker in the door are not working. I have played around with the fader and balance, the back left mid and subwoofer work, as do the back right mid and subwoofer. The tweeter, mid and woofer on the driver's side work, along with the footwell woofer on the passenger side. So this leads me to believe that it is a connection problem just with the two speakers in the left passenger door (possibly slamming it closed too hard?).

Has anyone experienced this problem? Could it just be a connection problem or will I have to order 2 new speakers from BMW? And what is the best way to go about this or any fixes?

Thanks for any help.

Can no-one help me? I've looked at the sticky on how to remove the door trim and I'm not sure how to do it without those special tools.

The best way to go about it would be to take off the door card and expose the terminals at the back of the speaker(s) in question.
Firstly, remove and then re-sit the connector to be sure it's not just worked loose.

then, if the problem still exists, using a multimeter, measure the impedance (set the meter to Ohms) across the speaker (unplug the speaker, then stick one of the multimeter prongs on each of the speakers connectors. If you get infinate impedance (eg, zero), then the speaker's blown. If you get around 1.0, then the speaker is fine.

After checking that, and assuming it's not blown, it's time to remove the headunit and unclip the wiring harness from the back of it.
Now, you need to identify which pin at the headunit harness end matches up with each wire you're going to test. (You could probably google a bit and find a pinout for the stereo and work it out from there.. or just do what I normally do and check each one in turn ;))

When you know which pin matches with which wire, connect one end of the multimeter to the speaker end of the wire, and the other to the headunit end of the wire, and with the meter still set to Ohms, you're looking for around 2 to 8ohms to be displayed.
If you get zero, you're either on the wrong pin at the headunit, or if you've tried them all, then you've got a broken wire.

repeat the above on all of the wires concerned.

If you have any broken wires, you're going to have to trace the wire back through the car until you find the break and either replace it or repair it.

If you find no breaks, and you're sure the speakers not blown, it's likely your headunit is on the bend :(

Hope that helps :)

special tools? never used a BMW special tool in my life, and I've had both door cards off countless times.
Just take it steady and be methodical about it and it's really quite easy.
