Audio Leads

Hi all !

I was wondering if there are any audio experts out there that can help me.

I have a KAM UHF dual microphone wireless receiver. I want to connect it to my Onkyo Amplifier. Problem is my Amplifier has HDMI and RCA inputs and the output from by mic receiver are a choice of a single mono unbalanced 1/4" jack or 2 balanced XLR connectors.

So the question is, can I connect direct to my amp with this cable?

or do I need to connect to my amp via a preamp like this:

:? :?

Thanks in advance for any help.

XLR are balanced (for noise rejection) and RCA are unbalanced

Balanced audio consists of earth plus 2 signals +(hot) and -(cold) so, in order to convert a balanced feed to an unbalanced feed, as a minimum you have to connect the - wire to the earth wire. If this isn't done there will be an incomplete circuit resulting in poor, noisy or absent sound.

That's the minimum requirement, for best quality you should really use a line balancing transformer to convert balanced XLR to RCA - however, you may get away with using the lead you have (if it operates as described above) but if you experience sound quality issues look for a transformer

Cheers.

So would you say there would be little point in using the balanced XLR output and that I should just look at a way to use the mono 1/4" jack output to RCA with or without the preamp?

Depends what you're trying to achieve - the jack output will connect to RCA without any problem whereas the XLR will give a higher quality feed, but you can't improve the quality of the original input - this may not be an issue; how good is your mic?
