can an aftermarket head unit be easily fitted to a z4 (with plug and facia adaptors) or does it have amplified speakers which will spoil the fade/balance etc.

Basic & it's easy. Anything else & it's not.

You can easily fit an after market system with the correct SOT converter; even an anologue DSP system would benefit from an aftermarket system.
The digital DSP system however will not work since it uses a bespoke DSP signal from BMW. although I believe there are option for that system also.

This was the first mod i made to the car, normally i would have fitted this myself - but after struggling with my A4 head unit decided to have it fitted, cost £250 including harness adaptor(s) (no steering wheel control) iphone lead, fascia & fitting (inc mic for phone by rear view mirror). No need for amp, sounds great - bargain,
