Audio Advice.

My car came with the standard 6 speaker system. Ive upgraded the headunit with an Alpine 9886R which now runs the speakers.

My question is regarding the mid range rear speakers, is there an external crossover that filters out the mid range or was this done by the headunit? Basically are they wired directly to the headunit, if they are then i'm looking to upgrade them to some better full range speakers.

Cheers

This is the place to look for z4 audio info.

I guess the easiest way to tell would be based on the wiring at the back of the stock headunit. If there is a cluster of 12 wires then each speaker is wired individually, if its 4 or 8 then there must be a crossover somewhere (maybe in each speaker itself).

The basic answer is with the 6 speaker set up, what you get is:-

Front Footwells Woofers
Front A Pillars Tweeters
Behind Seats Midrange

All connected directly to the Head Unit with about 0.75mm cable, little better than a doorbell.

Thare is no other speaker wiring present in the car.

How did you get on with the Fascia? :)

What are the woofers on the door if my car has standard BMW Business Radio? They are not real things then? The front left/right speakers are at footwell only?

If you have the basic BMW set up of 6 speakers, there are no speakers in the doors, only the grills.
If you check out the link in one of the other replies it will explain all, and the difference between the set ups.

Yes it does in my opinion. I plan to upgrade my speakers also dynamat everywhere then get the imprint processor for my 9886 alpine headunit.

You cant really just replace the headunit in non 6 speaker systems though as they send a digital signal to the amp in the boot which a aftermarket headunit cannot replicate.

i can confirm this is the case, as i do not have the amp to match the 10 speaker system i have, i effectively now just have the 6 speaker system, so im changing the head unit and looking into new rear speakers and another amp

Bit confused, I have the 10 speaker system. Do I have an amp in the boot? Can I not upgrade just the head unit?

Yes you will have an amp in the boot, next to the battery i believe. This means you wont be able to upgrade the headunit as an aftermarket headunit cant make use of the bmw amp so you would have to rewire all the speakers and use external aftermarket amps to power all 10 speakers.

edit* ignore my last post, i went out to the car and disconnected my amp, even though its the wrong amp in the car (its a 3 series harmon kardon one, original was not in the car when i bought it) when you unplug it you get no sound at all - which mean i was wrong, so the fact that i have the 10 speaker system means ill have to go oem and get a carver amp, dump the cd changer and get an ipod solution that uses the cd changer controls - bugger as i was looking forward to a new head unit :(

thats the first 2 cars of my life ive bought and later found out i could change units , first was an ibiza where it built into the dash, and i wasnt going to carve up the dash for the sake of some extra music.

Anyone happen to know the part number for the Amp that is in a 03 with premium sound?
I believe it is the Top Hifi system ( DSP) which came stock in the 3.0L US versions.
