Audi S5

There is quite some difference in performance between the S5 and M3, 355 vs 420 BHP respectively, maybe you were thinking of the RS5 which I would say is the direct competitor of the M3, the S5 is more like the 335.

Having had a 3 series loaner for a few days, I'm not so keen on the interior, admimtadly it was all black, but it just looks dated now, the A5 interior is a much better place to be IMO.

bigdog , we have the same problem with lorries doing that over here in the UK too

Unfortunately we don't have what the Germans do, which is the ability to put a rule in when needed to ban them from moving out of lane 1. I wish we did, they're just a rolling roadblock

S4>335
S4<M3

Not sure if the comparative lack of torque in an m3 would annoy...you dont always want to rev the tits off it

My dad had a e92...when i was taken out in a z4m the z4 did seem faster...maybe because in an m3 you feel a lot safer :o

It sits between the 335 and M3. It's about £3k dearer than a 335 in basic form I think?

Regarding the performance - i meant everday use because Spectre had mentioned something about the M3 having too much performance for the roads in the UK. The current S5 does the 0-60 in 4.9 versus about 4.6 in the M3 and both 155mph limited top speeds.

There is still a short stretch of the M42 north of Tamworth where lorries are banned from Lane 2. It's a trial being run by the DOT. Let's hope it becomes more widespread.

I need to go for a test drive to be sure but I am fairly sure the performance of the S5 would be fine, it's 0-60 is 4.9. I like to be able to give it the beans once in a while but that is fairly rare, most of the time I drive normally. That's why the 3.0 Z4 suits me, has a bit of grunt when I want it. I must be one of the fee on here that hasn't hankered after the M version. To be honest the interior is more of interest to me, as well as the looks. I quite like the exterior of the M3 but the inside is dull, the S5 seems to tick both boxes.

To be honest if I were to buy BMW I'd be more inclined to look at an X5, but then the interior is dull again.

From a lot of the responses on here it seems a lot love the M3, but it also seems a lot have track performance as number one factor.

Anyone have any experience of likely issues and maintenance costs of the S5? I've done a bit of digging and can't see much, although changing the gear knob apparently involves melting something!!

Funny that, it's where the M42 becomes dual carriageway that its such a royal pita

Oh I agree Stuart. I have to use that road a lot. Why they made that bit a dual carriageway I'll never know. The whole thing needs widening to 3 lane M-Way.

I test drove an s5 4.2 many years ago, dull as ditch water to drive and could barely hear the engine. Drive an s-tronic supercharged s4 of same era, was miles better. Changed the e46 m3 for the z4mc in the end though.
