Audi S5

The S5 convertible would have been on the top of my list if fuel economy hadn't been an issue, go for it Sp3ctre

Rs4, hell yeah. S5, just yeah. But m3 over the lot. My 3 series is "only" the 330i with the same n52 engine as facelift e85/e86s, but imo it's bloody brilliant. Obviously not quite the same level of thrills as the z4, but genuinely fun to drive and a lively cabin to be in. I only imagine the addition of a v8 makes it an epic car in m3 form.

+1. I want a V8 M3

Love the look of modern Audi's. Keep seeing the odd A7 around town and think they look the absolute business. Would go S5 or 6 over a 3er or 5er if it was my choice. They just look so damn sexy!

Actually, Im not a fan of Mercs but I've also recently had my head turned by an E350.

I was at our village bakery cafe today. And a guy pulls up in an Aston-Martin. What a lovely car. But it got me to thinking about different cars I'd like to own. It may sound strange. But I really don't think I'd like a "super car". Apart from the good looks of cars like the Aston-Martin. They are so fragile. You don't dare drive them much. And most owners tend to drive them like a Mondeo anyway. So really? What's the point. Other than to show the size of your wallet.

For me. It's all about the corners. Top speed really isn't a factor. I've lived in Germany for 21/2 years. And I've yet to drive the Zed past 130MPH. Since I like corners. That would eliminate all the Audi's but the R8's. So for me. It's the 3 series. Practical. Yet with the 335 sport package. Or an M3. You can have some serious fun in the twisties. I do have a love of unusual stuff as well. A Caterham would be loads of fun. And cheap to keep as well. Hard to come by in the US though. And as I own a home in the wine country of Walla Walla Washington. Where we have about 3-4 thunder storms all summer. A Caterham wouldn't be hard to deal with weather wise.

I love how we all love different things, I was only saying to the mrs yesterday that corners don't bother me that much i get really excited when I get on a nice straight piece of road & I can drive as fast as I can that gives me a buzz, having a play on an autobahn would be the best of all worlds for me :)

I always find going really fast around bends is you don't always know what's around the corner whereas a straight you can see what you are going to crash into easier!

Popped into a local garage last weekend and saw a nice looking Audi S5 (4.2 V8). I know it'sprobably not the best forum to get a balanced argument on this subject, but what's everyone's view on these?

It seems the BMW direct competition is the 335, but to me they are just dull as ditchwater outside and very "just like every other 3-series" inside.

Walking around it and sitting in it, it just fely more "special" than the 3-series.

Remit:

4 seats, as we often take passengers
Fuel economy doesn't matter (don't do enough miles to be bothered)
Has to have lots of toys :D

Same remit finds me currently looking at making a move to an S5 too :-)

I want to own a V8 while I still can.

The RS4 doesn't appeal to be honest... perhaps it would if it were all about performance, but I want something a bit more refined. Never quite seen the appeal of the M3 either really, for the same reasons... if I wanted a track monster then sure, M3 or RS4, but for UK roads I'm not so sure that level of performance is quite needed.

M3 V8 was one of my fav cars we've had. Just so much power all the way through the range brilliant. Would have another in a heart beat

Yeah, performance wise it's a bit of a no brainer, but the S5 is just so much nicer to sit in (IMO)

IMHO the A5 is a great car, audi's do have a different cabin ambience, I nearly did the A5tdi3.0.

I love the A5 shape, but two main things swayed me away from it, it's bloody big IMO too big for everyday parking, they are rapid but gives them a rapid bus like feel (if they made that shape in 3 series size, mmm), and the back seats are roomy/comfy but very difficult to get in out (why can't audi do decent front seat fold/slide mechanisms)

But other than that, if you're looking for a big, fast, lux, GT then there aren't many cars that can out do the A5 for the money... Maser GranTourismo maybe?

There isn't that much difference in performance between the M3 and S5 - both also using V8's so if you felt the M3 had too much for UK roads you'd probably feel similar about the S5? The E92 M3 is also quite refined especially if it has the EDC option ticked. You should try one - you might be surprised.

You could try an Alpina B3 Biturbo, or as I said earlier a muscle car like a Monaro VXR or Mustang? (though admittedly the last two wouldn't be especially refined).

We should plan an autobahn run!
Cool idea!

Just make sure you do said run on a Sunday. Most lorries are banned from the autobahns on that day. Unless it's a high priority load. Makes things a lot less dangerous.

We have a phenomenon over here that's called elephant racing. You might be on an unrestricted autobahn doing max speed. There are 2 lorries ahead. They are limited to 100KPH. But one is doing 99KPH. The lorry doing 100 will dive into the fast lane and proceed to block the road for miles at a time while the fast lorry passes the very slightly slower lorry. I have seen more high speed near accidents due to this tomfoolery by the lorry drivers.
