Audi R8 Side Lights

Anyone got any of these lights fitted on their Z4?? Not sure where you'd put them, probably on the lower grill on the bumper. Would they look stupid tho, that is the question!

these were actually mounted inside the lens, a complex operation requiring splitting the lens case. Not for the faint of heart! Looks really good though IMO

please dont do it. They look naff. I have seen them on a renault laguna, citroen saxo and a chavelier. however I suppose christmas is approaching so your car would look festive.....

They look bad enough on audi's (although look good on the r8?) not sure why anybody would want them on another car?

You guys have no sense of humour - go the whole hog and run a flashing light rope on the car.

Here's one I did in Santa's challenge - an off road competition:

By day - hardly noticable

By night - Blackpool - here we come...

That looks fantastic! Blackpool 4x4 :) Maybe we should have a special photo competition for the best Festive decoration on a Z4 this year!

Great idea :) the car has to be photographed in a public place though

You would have laughed at me getting past scrutineering. That contraption went from 12v cig lighter into a 240v converter then a mains 3 pin plug through the ropes transformer back to about 6 or 9v. You bet it was unplugged before I hit that lake....

Timothy notwithstanding the naysayers :D (and you'll find the one phrase you DON'T want to be uttering on here is "..so what do you guys think?", you'll see what I mean), I quite like the look myself.

Given that they are bloody useless and permanently misted up in many cases, I am planning to try and dissect the fogs (I have the long flat facelift ones as opposed to the earlier round ones) and see if they could be integrated in there somehow....dispensing with the fog bulb of course....instant power supply, switch and no need to feck about with the headlights.....simples!

....but its raining right now :P

For sure - it I were to do this then that's where they would go - no doubt. It should be easy enough to chop them up and frankly when you seal them back up it will be invisible as they are set so deep into the bumper cover.

You'll need to work out the wiring and either find a DRL lead/fuse or tap into the sidelight wire, else they will of course only come on if you have dipped on and then actually switch the 'fog' lights on. You'll also need to drop in some sort of resistor else you'll throw a bulb out warning on the dash. Not sure if that has to be 5w or 21w?? You could of course build a simple circuit to fool the bulb out test (have these on my X5 after a switch to OEM xenon)

Anyway - that's for later - once the rain stops and it's light get out there and start cutting

Oh an on behalf of the Nay sayers - BMW have AE and Audi's do LED's (and Porsche and Merc and Corsa's too)

Ah, didn't realise they needed dipped as opposed to sides....my other car doesn't work that way...thanks for the tip!

CJ I don't suppose, having tinkered as you have, whether you know if the strips of LEDs you get can be cut to length, or would I need to find a set the right length...i've never seen any in the flesh so to speak.....

Ah - not so big and brave to run out now, spanner the lights out and cut them up :poke:

Firstly my bad - they do indeed work on sidelights only, but reset to 'off' once the sidelights are off.

I've never played with a set of these 'strip' LEDs, but I would assume they are wired in series and have enough to match the cars voltage. Pure conjecture but I'd expect you need a strip that is both flexible and short enough to fit whichever internal run of the light you plan to work to.

Ah, big storm coming now, busy battening my hatches down! :P

Was aware of the foglight reset thing - good idea IMHO and I can live with that, but you're right, a link into the sidelights would be better.

I'm racking my brains for o-level physics here but I thought DC would be wired in parallel wouldn't they, which is why I thought one could cut the unwanted bulbs off - I just have this dim memory (probably the right adjective in my case!) of being shown a strip of bulbs wired in series that got progressively dimmer along their length...? And of course parallel would prevent the problem of one failed lamp taking the lot out.....?

Well it depends on the voltage required by each LED. If 12v they would be wired in parallel, but if say 3v then you'd group them in series of 4.

The rear LED brake light on the Z4 uses series of 3 x 5V LEDS in series with each group then in parallel on the circuit board.

Confused yet?

Guess I'd better bite the bullet and go find Mr Hong Kong Phooey on fleabay and buy me some of them little suckers.

Last question, you've had the bumper off a few times - fogs easy to extract?

Yes - once the bumper cover is off then just a couple of fastners. Can't even recall what they are - hex headed self tapers? Bound to shear off it been in a while though....lol
