Attack on cyclist

So one day I sat down with a traffic officer & 2 hours of commute vide (90 min of cycling & 30 min of car). We found about 40% of cyclists broke a road traffic law on the video & 70% of motorists.
As has been said "there are lies, damn lies, and statistics" :)

So, how many cyclists were there in the 90 mins, and cars in 30 minutes?

Only then are we able to get a true comparison.
58 cyclists & 271 motorists.

Scariest was that about 60 of those were people overtaking me when I was travelling at the speed limit.

We're you in those percentages ? :D
Yes, ran a red light, but had I not then I'd not be typing right now as the HGV behind me also ran the red light.

Who will blame you for making that choice?

I've done the sums ..........

The video lies - there must have been loads of cyclists in stealth mode :o

Well we all how most of them have no lights, hi-viz, helmets, etc ......

So top 5 were -
Speeding (this excluded any motorway/trunk road driving)
Crossing a solid white centre line
Overtaking when unsighted
Failure to give way when required
Jumping red lights - of the 26 vehicles given a red light on my way to work (a 4:30am to 5:15am commute) 24 of them jumped a red light!

I did wonder. It's the same the world over! I get abuse as a pedestrian crossing with the green man because I'm in the wrong for almost being hit by a cyclist. I like to film them, they don't like it.......well don't do it.

Girl at work had a fine, I thought she had been given yet another fine for jumping a red light on her bike, but no it was a bus lane fine which she was fuming about but she actually had the cheek to say that jumping red lights is all part of the fun and she didn't mind the fine! Sorry? See the financial penalty is doing its job, not! And she's always complaining she's skint! She was once late for a meeting cause she jumped a red light right in front of a police car and actually argued why she was right to do so. Idiot.
Can cyclists not get points on their driving license for jumping red lights?
Years ago when I worked for Pony Express one of the push bike couriers got done for going through a red light and was issued a fixed penalty fine and asked to produce his driving license at St Andrews Street (where you went to pay fines years ago in Glasgow) He didnt have a driving license at all and could not hand it over to collect his points. Not sure what the outcome was.

I got reported at 18 for running a red light on my mothers shopping bike! I was rebuilding my cooper s at the time and it needed petrol! Didn't stop at the lights cos the brakes were knackered!

No that was motorists :P

My parents live close to where that was filmed. That particular roas is often very busy and is pretty much a free for all, with cars darting out from side roads very dangerously.

The cyclist is very lucky not to have been killed by his own stupidity, although that doesn't mean it was ok for the van driver to be an angry violent tosser.

What gets me is if I was behind a cyclist and was close to a junction where I was going to turn left I would slow down and let the the cyclist go,

I think the van driver is a tool and needs educating, what ever the cyclist did, was it worth pushing him of the road and then assaulting him for

But the cyclist went up the side of the van as he turned ? I know you have a responsibility to take care as a motorist, but surely if a van is indicating to turn left then a cyclist should slow down, if only out of self preservation ? Both idiots IMO.

As for drivers running red lights, that is my second biggest pet hate after not indicating. It's almost guaranteed nowadays that when a light turns red at least one vehicle and/or cyclist will keep going. At closely timed and 'hooded' signals that you cannot see change it's feckin dangerous and I've almost been hit - or nearly run into - people jumping lights more times than I can count. They all need a good hard slap. In the forehead. With a baseball bat.

I know how you feel Bing, but is it worth a criminal record ?
Or worse, getting well smacked back?

A group is trying to get this as law in Scotland. There are probably more to lobby against it given the attitude of a lot of the cyclists on city streets.

I believe the UK is one of only 5 in he EU who don't have this law, so if they do implement this does that mean that a cyclist is held responsible if they hit a pedestrian? Even if they walk out in front of them on a red man for example?

I hope that they are forced to have a third part insurance!

+ 1, but impractical. It would cost more than many a bike. as it's usually the less experienced road users riding

not true - simply join the CTC - get third party insurance as part of membership. about £40 a year ;)

I would not want to cycle uninsured. I have third party insurance for that, costs next to nothing but if I do happen to cycle into something at least I am covered. Why would you want to take the risk in traffic?

Yeah, I was talking metaphorically... Wouldn't get out my car to anyone, not first anyway - I'm a big chicken really :)

Have a proper look Bing, there is another van stopped at the left junction, so bad van couldn't turn left anyway and tbh I think it's very difficult to see if he's inducating left anyway, the shot is far to brief to see an on/off flash.

The problem with peeps these days is that we are all in a rush to get somewhere and take liberties trying to get there and the stupid thing is that rushing just gives us more stress.

Guys be patient on the road and be courteous to other road users, give cyclists room and try to anticipate other road users actions, don't get angry behind the wheel, you are in control of a machine that CAN and does KILL

a brief moment of anger can have absolute dire consequences for you and your family

Fair point sars. And the first thing my father ever said to me when I sat in a car for the first time was never to forget I'm driving a weapon.

First thing my dad told me was to assume everybody else is trying to kill you
