Attack of the trees!

Coming home just now and an almighty thump!
No other cars near me didn't even know what happened.

Branch came down on the O/S wing mirror and door
Need a new wing mirror £818.00
Probably also going to have to replace the door!

Recorded on the dash cam, can just make out the branch falling as I was passing.
Just bad luck I suppose.
First insurance claim ever in over 40 years of driving :(

If the paint isn't broken you might be lucky and have a dentman pull that door out. At least it wasn't a hit and run and you know what happened.

Ouch, that is bad luck .... However, whoever owns / is responsible for the tree can be claimed against potentially ... if local authority when was the tree last inspected ? It may sound silly but the tree could be liable ! :?

I have been reading up about who to blame, unless I can prove that the person or council knew that the tree was dangerous, I have no claim. That would be a really hard one to prove and I am sure it would be vigorously contested.

Reckon I will just have to go with "act of God".

Got the man from the body shop coming over this afternoon and you never know there may be a reasonable way of repairing without insurance.

How much for a wing mirror! :o

Hmm - I sometimes have a few similar concerns driving my Zed with the roof down . . . .

Glad you weren't hurt and hope you get sorted as easily as possible

wow that price seems a bit OTT for a wing mirror, unlucky on the tree hitting you but lucky as well it didn't land
on the roof of your Z, good luck with getting it all sorted out

What crap luck, I'd be gutted. Sorry you had this.

I guess on the positive it was'nt a huge branch going through your windscreen. Still rotten thing to have though.

Hope you get sorted without too much expense.

Ouch, glad that hit the mirror and didn't come through the screen at you.

I was sat in my old Astra Sport minding, my own business at work one lunch hour, many years ago. Next thing bang a three inch lump of cast iron hit the base of the screen and the bonnet, wrecked both. No act of God that time though, act of poor maintenance on an old crane, so the yard paid for the repairs.

You just never know.

Hope you get it sorted, quick and at reasonable cost.

Have to say that I usually have the roof and windows down (yes, even in winter), so I suppose I can be thankful that it had been raining. Otherwise the branch could have hit the window and bounced into the car instead of into the road.

Still, for some reason I don't feel so lucky.

Good news is that it looks like the wing mirror (main part) might have survived and I only need the glass £322.00 (£322.00 for a piece of mirrored glass!!!!) and a new cover £90.00 sprayed.

Try a salvage company. I've seen E89 parts on Ebay

If they don't inspect the tree regularly they can't know it's condition. I dealt with something where a tree fell and there were no records of any inspection of the tree thus they paid out. I should add someone died so it was a little different but the principle is the same.

I must have miss-read your post as I thought it said £818 for a door mirror but that obviously can't be right?
I don't know what's worse, getting hit by a falling branch or being robbed blind by bmw!
Regards

Body shop man came over to have a look....
Not as bad as I expected.
He'll do me a favour as I found him a rescue dog (that's another story) and repair, spray, etc for £500 cash; but I must supply mirror.
Looked on ebay and sure enough there are some great prices for second hand genuine parts.

I just need to understand whether all the mirrors are the same. Are they all electric? Do they all fold?
No point in buying something that I won't be happy with.

Any advice?

40 years of claim free and you will still be treated like an undesirable alien when it comes to renewal!

Never claimed
Of course that doesn't mean that I haven't left a trail of destruction in my wake :P

Hoping that I might get away with it again, if I can only find a used O/S mirror that folds electrically

That price for the mirror is ridiculous.
Its no wonder cars get written off even with little damage when small parts like this cost so much.
