Attaching Number Plates

I've just bought a new set of number plates (not private plates) as my old ones were in a real mess and spoiling the look of the car.

They have sent me some screws and also some very sticky pads to fix them.

I'd rather stick them on, but I'm a bit worried they may fall off particularly with the bend of both plates when attached.

Have any of you attached your number plates with sticky pads, or are you all screwed on like mine currently are?

Sticky pads on my plates for 10 years. Never lost one, they are very strong.

Three sticky pads and 2 blobs of sillicone sealant/adhesive. Holds them on a treat. :wink:

Sticky pads all the way - you can buy the stuff in rolls in DIY stores if you want the reassurance of extra sticky pads. Use extra on the ends of the front one due to the bend. No problems in the 10+ years I've been using this method.

Much cleaner look than drilling/screwing IMO.

Have a carbon look plate surround on the back looks nice on the silver car then plate is stuck on with the same tape they use for badges as said above comes in a roll.

Front plate is mounted in the normal way not sure i would risk pads on the front even though lots do plus i remove my front plate now and then when detailing the car.

Have thought about velcro would think its strong enough to hold the plate but will weather affect it ?

Crucial to warm the pads with a hairdryer before sticking them to the back of the plates. Heat again before fitting them to the car. Firm pressure for a few mins and hey presto.

i found the front plate hard to stick on because of the curve

Sticky pads do the trick every time and look a whole lot neater.

Just take time to keep everything clean, if sticking them on in this cooler weather, warm the pads up!

Make sure to put a bend in the new plates - I used an electric paint stripper - put the required bend in the plate then gently warm the front face. Just let the thing cool - be patient and remember that the rear plate also has a slight bend.

The only time i've ever had a problem was when I didn't heat bend a plate on the front of my Disco!

Interesting, never heated any of mine....tend to use the Halfords stickies as I can never find them anywhere else

I stuck the front plate on my D3 and it has a similar curve on the front plate - over a few months it was showng the signs of parting company as the required forced bend puts the pads under some tension.
Heated it up to put a bend in it, new pads and now Roberts my uncle!

I refuse to put a front plate on. I have only had the car for two months but I will take the risk as the car looks beautiful without a front plate.

Agree that some sort of surround looks good on the rear of a silver Z4
