At what point will Z's become worthless?

Reading a few threads and my general view on the wider market, it got me thinking about...at what moment in time will Z4's (and all other ICE cars) become a worthless piece of kit? The electric car movement is here for real and you've got to think almost every new car sold in 2025 will be an electric vehicle, in turn driving the demand for ICE car's down so low that they almost become worthless.

I'd even go as so far to think older special cars (Ferraris and the like) will start to regularly have their motor switched out to an EV so they can actually be used.

Interested to read peoples predictions.

I don’t think that date of 2025 is actually going to happen, the infrastructure just isn’t there to support it?

I'm assuming we're talking about pure EVs and not hybrid's?

There's no doubting sales of EVs are on the rise, and manufacturers are bringing more and more models onto the market but there are still two fundamental issues that mean sales won't increase at that pace (almost all cars being EV by 2025)...

Cost of the cars and charging infrastructure.

I think it will be at least 2030 before EVs get more than 50% of new car sales. And hybrid's will still be popular for a long time after then.

So we'll still have petrol for our zeds for a long time yet.

Autonomous cars on the other hand, whilst being far away themselves, could see the end of the zed at some point in the distant future (2040 at very earliest, more like 2050 or beyond). A world with both autonomous and non autonomous cars isn't especially practical and I can see those spelling the end for our cars on the public roads at some point.

But ultimately, will our zeds be off the roads in the next 20-30 years? Very, very unlikely.

Nevertheless, get driving them while you still can. I'm off to drive mine now  :driving:

I'd guess that there will be more hybrid's first until the range issue is sorted, nevermind the massive increase in power demand on the national grid. Petrol / diseasal ones will go eventually when EVs become a better alternative.

The electric motors into old cars thing has already happened, albeit on a limited scale with high end ones.

It would great if an exemption was made for ICE cars fuelled by sustainably produced bioethanol, even if they were totally banned (on the basis of noise, for example) in urban areas.

But yeah, drive it while you can...

The infrastructure won't be there for years yet, plus the planet couldn't handle everyone driving electric, its still bad for the environment. Personally I reckon something else will come along, still think Solar will happen to some extent for hot Countries.....Who knows!!

At the same point as every other petrol/diesel becomes worthless,
I agree, at the moment the government has targets that just cant be met, can you imagine what it will take to make very car, van, lorry, artic, motorbike, electric, put in the infrastructure etc
also at the moment the electric car industry is at the point mobile phones were 15 years ago, it is changing rapidly, that is of course provided they don't go down a different route, possibly hydrogen

I suspect governments would suppress solar cars if the tech became available, it’s hard to tax sunlight! :P

Not just high end, spoke at depth the the owner of this company at the Goodwood FOS last year.

Beetle, Fiat 500 hardly high end classics.

When London is 10 feet under water the tax will go on rowing boats, it will be called the Venice of the south !

Reading about topics like this is one of the few times I'm glad I'm not younger!

At least cars with an ICE look like being around as long as I am.

I agree. Okay well, I could be a little younger.... say maybe 20 years

That's one of the problems these days - nobody has any respect for their elders!

IC cars will be around as long as there is petrol and people who want / can afford to drive them.

10 years it won't be so different to now. Not untill they sort out the second hand market ref batteries that cost more than the car.

Targets and reality, seldom similar especially when generated by political numpties with little grasp of the former. :D

20 years ago it was a lot easier to get in and out of these little cars and I had hair on my head,
.... not just on my back and ears

Back on topic (not that I'm even remotely a spring chicken...), what about Hydrogen? Surely if this can become mainstream it will blow electric out of the water? I thought the biggest problem was the safe storage of it, and some Australian scientists have sorted that just recently according to a news item I saw some months ago. Seems a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly option.
