At the moment petrol is about £1.40 per litre here in the Scottish Highlands which is about £6.40 per Imp gallon or £5 per US gallon which is $8.
It's not cheap but it's fun. :lol:

To me the best indication that we have already reached a prohibitory price for petrol is the rock bottom price that used big engine cars like the Z4 are selling for these days.
Not sure. Costs me £8 in fuel each day to commute at the moment.
My wife has a Mazda 2 1.5 sport and it costs her £5 in an "economical" car.
Compared to the depreciation on either car the difference in consumption is peanuts!

Well that depends. One way the British need to look at it. Is a matter of when you are going to TELL your government to not tax it so damn much. From my outside looking in view. Most countries tax fuel to maintain and build new roads. From what most on this forum have said. The Queens road service has not maintained the roads very well. So at a certain point. One needs to start holding the politicians feet to the fire. If they can't be bothered to use the fuel tax for it's intended purpose. Then it's time to reduce said tax. Fuel is a world commodity that is traded in US dollars. As your pound is worth so much. Your initial raw cost of fuel is rather low. It's your government that profits the most from fuel. When your and my government cast blame on the oil companies. It's simply a diversion tactic.
After expenses. The oil companies average net profit is about 3 cents per US gallon. The profit numbers look out of place and so high simply because we buy so much fuel. In the US. The federal and state tax on a US gallon of fuel is around 50 cents per gallon. And they have the nerve to say the oil companies make obscene profits. Then there is Britain and the EU who tax fuel about 400-500% higher than the US does. fuel in the US is at about 2 pounds 67 per gallon. Or 68P per liter. That includes tax.

You hit on a good point though, because it's not just the cost of fuel which dictates what people are willling to spend on petrol... it's the price of the alternatives as well, and trains etc. continue to get more expensive

I think people will keep paying whatever is charged.
ok, so they might cut back on trips etc, but they wont ditch the car completely.
How often has it been said they put fuel duty up to encourage more use of public transport? In rural areas, using public transport just doesn't work and private vehicles are a necessity. People in those areas have no alternative.
When I worked at my local college, and I was just driving to work and back each day, I actually got rid of my car (but we still had another car). Now I travel around for work, I need a car.
If the price becomes too much for the individual (cos the level will be different for everyone) then the alternatives will be looked at and the cost of convenience of a car will be questioned.

I suppose I should be sympathetic but it is difficult not to laugh. Fuel Duty is one of the few taxes that can be ameliorated. A 1.1L diesel Polo at 70+mpg is less than a third of the price of an 4.8L X5. We can choose how much we pay. Much better than most of the other taxes we get clobbered with.

Your first post was right though - they done spend it on the roads, they rely on it for other things.

Yep 37+ is more than achievable if you stay around 60mph (with cruise enabled)
I drove from bham to St. Albans and back a few weeks ago and averaged 39mpg each way
However adding to the thread I bought a mighty 1.0 Micra a few weeks ago!
