Astra mk6 experiences and opinions?

Anyone had or owning one at the moment? Looking at buying one for the parents to upgrade from an Astra mk4. Looked at a 1.6 Sri today seemed a smart and nice enough car really. But thought I'd ask to see if anybody has experience with them or good alternatives. Thanks. Liam.

I had a look at one this evening and all checked out well. But it does seen to be leaking engine oil from somewhere and is over the gearbox. Here's some pictures, 7agutabe.jpgyhy7uvym.jpgyzyqy4es.jpg

Is it something to be concerned about and avoid or a simple fix or to be ignored. Seemed quite damp underneath but oil level seemed fine. This is the only thing putting me off an otherwise really smart car.

TBH you are better off asking on a VX forum, they will know much more about them than us, especially if its a common issue.

Er, sh*t.

I have a 2013 1.7tdi 130hp SE as part of a company "value" drive... What can I say - on the plus side it's cheap to run. 65 mpg on a run is quite easy. I average around 55mpg with quite a heavy right foot.

On the downside - creaky trim, hopeless aircon, very poor rear vision due to thick rear quarter pillars and small rear window. The diesel at least is horrendously rattly when cold, I'm talking transit van rattly.

My wife bought a brand new 2013 Astra 1.4 energy last year and it won't pull the skin off a rice pudding. I don't like it, nowhere near as good as her old Fiesta 1.4 Zetec.
First gear pulling out of a junction, I could pedal faster. There is a junction close to us we have to pull out of into the main road which is a slight bend so cant see if clear of traffic, so you have to be quick getting out, well it just dies if you accelerate hard to avoid someone hitting you side on.
Following traffic up a 40mph incline is 3rd gear or it just dies, forever changing up and down the box.
Overhead panel in headlining has an annoying constant rattle.
Even though its a petrol its rattily. Exhaust sounds like its blowing but apparently they have drain holes in, but excuse me isn't an exhaust with holes in an MOT failure!!!

I just don't like it

Don't let me put you off though

Consider the Ford Fiesta, they have a bit more oomph.

I had a 2.0 SRi D on hire for several months, strangely dead feeling about the whole driving experience, weird keyless starting drove me nuts along with the auto stop-start and electronic parking brake. Engine was strong enough but coarse and unusually for a Vauxhall the seats were not comfortable.

I'de spend just a little more to get in to a Focus or a slightly older Golf as both feel so much better to drive and be in

+1 for the golf, we have two Mark 6 golfs in our family a Gti and a tdi, rock solid cars, as you'd expect well thought out, super build, comfortable big car feel, just better in every way IMHO

Had the Astra GTC a few years back. Personally didn't like it, poor fuel economy (35 mpg on the 1.4T) and gutless performance made for quite a tainted experience. Oh and I also lost £7k in the 10 months I owned it which was a nice, final parting shot lol so residuals ain't good if it's new or relatively new.

My sister has the 2.0 CDTI GTC which is good though, fast n frugal.

A car I would recommend for similar money is Honda Civic 2.2 CDTI. Had one for 3 years and couldn't fault it. Nice interior, cheap to tax and run and super reliable (fact lol)

I had 1.6 Sri hire car for a work trip. Very nice car. Power wise I was a bit disappointed. It had marginally more grunt than SWMBOs 2012 1.2 Clio
