Assigning a retention plate to a new car

I have my plate on retention and want to assign it to a new car. If I go through the DVLA site do I need the plates already made up or is there a delay? The dealer is being slow at getting them done, so I want to chivvy them along a bit :)
 
The dealer has to put on their plates - you can not bring your own as they have to be "legal" and be the supplier of the plates. You can swap them if you don't like them afterwards.

They need your retention certificate though.

Cool, just did the transfer online and it says I can put them on now... spoke to the dealer and they are making them up this aft, I will pick them up after work... result :)
 
Why would you go to a dealer for plates? I imagine they outsource this to someone else and then charge double the price.

I think I paid £12 off ebay and mine came with sticky pads, screws and covers.
 
The dealer is legally required to put on plates before delivery. So if it is a new car, it would be your private plate number, on their plates, assuming they have the retention certificate.

If second hand car, different matter as you would or could drive away on the original plates and get the certificate assigned yourself and get the £12 eBay plates.
 
Did an online transfer recently - took me nearly a week to swap the plates and had no issues, so I'm guessing they give you a fairy healthy period of grace.
 
Every time I've bough another car from a dealer either new or used, BMW or Audi - once they had the dvla papers, they were happy to make and apply the the plates for free.

Just make sure you you tell them to use sticky pads and not 6mm plastic bolts!
