This may help...
If you haven't already take out the screw underneath the ash tray and pull the whole console out - you don't need to do it all the way. Once the front is about an inch clear try closing the lid again. If it works, open the lid lower slightly and then close, keep doing this until it stops closing - chances are it will be a final locating click when you push the console in. Happened to mine. It seems to be that there is too much pressure on front to back when seated in the hole which stops the lid from closing. I used a Dremel to shave down the front where the console and the hole meet, works fine now. If this is the same for you just be careful not to trim down anything that is going to be visible.
If you're keeping coins in the tray, cut a piece of felt to go over the top and stick down along the back edge - stops the coins getting out and down into the mechanism... otherwise at some point you will be looking for a solution to a lid stuck closed.
