Ash tray won't open

It seems that I've over loaded my ash tray with change and something has dropped down the back of it.
The result is that the ash tray lid will only open about an inch.
I've tried to locate the offending item, without success, but I was being quite gentle to avoid breaking or damaging the lid.
Any ideas?
How can I dismantle that part of the console without access through the ash-tray?
I know it's not a major problem, but it's really bugging me!! :(

you can feel where the switches behind the ashtray by removing the panel below the air con controls. you may be able to dislodge the offending item that way?

only thing I can think of :?
