Ash Tray wont close, or open

Hi all,

I've had my Z4 just over a week and the only thing I can find fault with is the ash tray lid. When I got the car it was closed fully, upon opening it, it only went half way and now won't close fully or open fully. Its still damped and looks like the left hand side plastic "hinge" is broken. I've done a couple of searches and found people referencing coins being stuck, but I can't see any.

Any advice ? Has anyone replaced their own ? Can you buy just the cover from a dealer ?

( I sent a message to someone advertising them for sale on the sale board, but no reply :-( )

Kind Regards

Gareth

They are very easy to remove to find any problems. If i remember - Just lift out the ashtray and undo one screw, the whole assembly then just pulls out.

Thanks Dreamer, I cant get the ashtray out as the lid wont open far enough..... I dont want to break the lid, to find BMW charge you for the whole unit rather than just a lid....

I ring a dealer and find out, just wondered if anyone knew if it came as a separate part. Or any mods that people have done to remove the lid ? Cubby holes seem to be at a premium... Apart form the ones behind the seats, which i've no idea what behind them is !

I believe the part number for the bit is 51167037227, and that weighs in at £108 - so you don't want to be breaking it!

As far as I can tell, they don't sell just the lid, and I haven't any advice on how to open it - so this whole post is pretty useless..

But I just wanted to wish you luck with it

Not from my perspective, I now know if i break it, its gonna cost me £108 :D

I meant I've no Idea what the idea behind them is. I.e. Why they are even there.

Thanks for the replys, I'll go gentle and see if i can "persuade" if to come out and post back with any useful info. Certainly not a big issue and thankful thats the only thing I can find wrong :D

Had this same problem. Something will be jammed behind it, both times this happened to me there was. I used tweezers to attempt to move it so the lid would open enough to get the tray out. Once the tray is out you can remove screw and pull entire section out. Whatever was behind there will then drop out.

the cubby holes behind the seats are there because if you opted for the ugraded stereo, there would be subwoofers in there!

I would try tweezers before anything else. and be careful, try to ease the ashtray out bit by bit

Just broke mine trying to get coins out..........what a dumb design.
Now gonna have to live with it or fork out £108. :headbang:
