Or did the tick only appear when I did very few miles in my first 6 weeks of ownership as myself and my local garage sorted out various niggles (oil leak, alignment, front fog lights and the leaking MOT fail-in-waiting of a nearside headlight)? In which case maybe a drive is all the car needs.

Sitting for most of 6 weeks definitely wouldn't help.

Quite often I didn't use my 3.0Sis for a couple of weeks and when I did I usually got lifter tick. But a drive from Sandhurst to the Black Swan always cured it before I got there!

I just wish I could remember whether it had that tick or not when I bought it!!!

Great article.

When we got our Z4, we bought it from a chap in Luton. We flew down from Glasgow to get it. I was worried about the MPG from a 3.0 on the long drive home. I needn't have worried, we quite quickly saw it rise above 40mpg on the steady run up the A1, I couldn't believe it. I still love the engine, its smooth, instant power, and makes a fantastic noise when you're having fun with it.

That last sentence is spot on. It has a lovely lovely tone... it's not some lairy sounding beast but very satisfying. It is smooth and I love the instant power... I am happy to rev a car, but equally I love that you can be dawdling in 4th at 30 and still have a bit of an immediate pull when you floor it. I test drove a 3 litre subaru a couple of nights back... lovely but the six cylinder boxer engine didn't pull until it was revving
