ARSE

Bad luck. I believe this is still available, definitely worth dropping him a msg. Same kit as our cars I'm 99% certain.

Thanks.
Flywheel part number matches, but the clutch part number doesn't.

Just waiting on some prices from my own indy, and a local indy.

Yep, that is a bit of an arse. Stick with your indies, they actually want your business so will price accordingly...

Hmmm....

Are they saying the pressure plate has worn through, overextending the slave cylinder, causing it to leak ?

What are they saying is actually "wrong" with the clutch ?

That's part of the problem.

Their 'diagnosis' is 'the clutch has gone' - but they won't know more until they take it apart - and then they might as well do the whole job while it's apart. Catch 22.

Although they've said that if it was just the slave cylinder then the pedal would not normally return to it's up position - so they 'think' the release bearing may have jammed on the shaft or the clutch/flywheel are simply heavily worn.

Will have to have the indy look at it anyway, and I was budgeting (£1k) for a replacement this year - although after my brake upgrade, cooling system refresh and next 'Ring trip. If it had been at an indy with a £1k quote then I wouldn't have even blinked.

The pedal would return because of the return spring on the clutch pedal..

That car needs looking at by someone who isnt trying to have your pants down.

Im not saying the clutch hasnt gone, but if there was a puddle of fluid, then the slave cylinder has leaked.... At a minimum the slave cylinder should be replaced to see how the clutch operates...

Not just throw all new parts at it just to cover a lack of diagnosis skill.......

Almost everyone else I've spoken to agrees with you :P

That's why I've got to get it to one of my indies. Closest I trust is 45 miles away, and I can't do much until I get back from London on Friday :headbang:

Although I'm not going to risk it being just the slave cylinder, and will tell the indy to do the whole job (and hand me back the old stuff for peace of mind).

Fair enough...

Although being honest i would never change a clutch unless it was showing a problem...

I would save the £1000 until there was a fault...

Remind us how many miles are on the clutch assembly please?
138,000

Which is why I'm not surprised it needs doing - just surprised at the rip-off price.

At those sort of mikes I would definitely have the whole lot done - but not at any price!
If you get a good price offered just make sure you don't get cheapo parts in the installation.

I've specified OEM LUK clutch & flywheel and I know I can get the parts direct from LUK for £900 - or from a couple of various motor factors for half that!

Just waiting for the indy to reply to my request.

Well, it's booked to be dropped off somewhere local-ish on Saturday, but probably won't start on it immediately. I'll report back on how they've done - so we may have another specialist to add to our database.

Quote is £1248 - using proper LUK parts and includes an hour or so to fit some new discs I'm supplying - which is less than the price BMW wanted for just the clutch.

Thats pretty good, all in!
Definitely, and about what I'd factored in for a Nov/Dec clutch/flywheel change anyway (i.e. after my next Ring trip and last Oulton Park visit of the year).

Parts are about £900 of that, and 6 hour's labour at £55/hour, and probably a bit for fluids/cleaning materials.

I expect there may be a few extra 'little bits' required due to the miles on the car, as they'll probably have to cut some bolts away to remove the exhaust. Or they'll find I need a slave cylinder too. We'll see :P

Maybe I should ask them to look at the slight drip I've got from the rear mains seal while they're in there (although it's never got any worse in 4 years)?

Asked them to modify the quote to include that.

My preferred local indy (Darren Wood) came out about 20% cheaper, but couldn't fit me in for a month

ETA: additional of rear main seal was £30 - no extra labour charge

Well it's now at Graham Martin Automotive in Lea Green, St. Helens, looks like a fairly decent indy. Even has a cafe for breakfast/coffee - and courtesy cars for service customer. All at about 1/3rd of the price of main dealers in the North West.

Still looks good...even on a recovery truck... :P

It's never good when something unexpectedly goes wrong, especially when it lands you with a big bill, but at least it got you around the National and back home.
Hope they get it fixed soon
