Nice collection their Bigdog, That Chuck yeager Colt is gorgeous, and worth a few $$$ I would imagine.
I take it these are all still back home as I can not imagine the German authorities letting you have them

I know Guns are not everyones cup o tea but I also don't think its fair to have a go at someone who collects firearms.
Being an army brat then joining the services myself I was brought up with and have handled / used many types of firearms, I have never, ever ever felt the need or urge to point one at another living thing.

But I do agree we should not arm our bobbys.

Save and sound in storage at an undisclosed location. That Chuck Yeager was a gift from my step mother to my father. After he passed away. She gave it to me. Believe it or not. I could have brought all of them to Germany. There is a US Military gun club near me that has weapons storage and a first rate shooting range as well as ammo sales. I to was a military brat and spent twenty years in the Air Force (retired in 1995) working on minuteman II nuclear missile targeting and electronics systems and in a combat communications unit. As you can see from my last post. I did feel compelled to protect my mom as she was being beaten by her date. Even as a 14 year old. I didn't take that action lightly and I was scared to death. But as I had grown up around guns I knew better than to just open fire. The mere brandishing of my rifle sent the attacker on his way.

So it would appear that those who have been properly educated on firearms would have a more calm and forward thinking approach when contemplating using one a normal 14 year old would have most likely let rip first and prob miss.
I remember our class's first time on the firerange when going through basic training in 1981, even after all the classroom work and range safety lessons many have a strange urge to point it the wrong way, I witnessed one guy getting the gunnery officers right boot in his testicles, it hospitalized him, for 2 weeks.

I however have pulled a gun on a guy my mom was dating. As he decided to start beating her after bringing her home from a date. I shudder to think what might have happened to my mom had my only option been to call the police and wait while I stood there and watched my mom take a beating. I was only 14 years old. No way could I have stopped him my self. No shots were fired. I simply told him to get the F out of our house. He did. And rather quickly I might add.

Considering the type of man he was to be beating your mother, I guess you're lucky he didn't fetch a gun himself and return...

The bloke knew I had big fire power, he wasn't coming back. Most criminals will in fact avoid a home that they suspect has a gun owner living there. Criminals are stupid but not so stupid to willingly enter a place they might not leave.

Switzerland has something of a history and is geared to defend itself and its neutrality in the future. You don't need military grade assault weapons to defend your home.

I don't have that military grade weapon for home defense. Read the US founding fathers letters and documents about citizen weapons, Like the federalist papers or the second amendment. Then you will know why I have that 7.62MM. or this from just a few years ago.
"Our main agenda is to have all guns banned. We must use whatever means possible. It doesn't matter if you have to distort the facts or even lie. Our task of creating a socialist America can only succeed when those who would resist us have been totally disarmed."
Sara Brady
Chairman, Handgun Control Inc, to Senator Howard Metzenbaum
The National Educator, January 1994, Page 3.

and this from European history.
"This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!"
Adolph Hitler
Chancellor, Germany, 1933

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree. But rest assured. If you are standing anywhere near me and someone attacks you with a cricket bat or pulls a gun on you. Would you want me to stop him by pulling my pistol or have me call the police? Of course you really wouldn't have to ask. I would willingly come to your rescue.

Sorry if it pisses folk off but I am a definite yes to arming the police.

It is the responsibility of government to modify laws to suit changing conditions, and at this point in our history, we have huge amounts of scumbags walking our streets that have no respect for anybody or anything other than themselves.

Point in question was the scumbag who killed the 2 female cops .....
obviously a "hard man" with status ...... yeah right. First thing he did was turn himself in so nobody would hurt him .... he knew the entire police force would be after him and he could become an accident .... like most "hard men" .... full on pussy.

Cops all over europe are armed ..... but never use them ...... point is, if threatened, they can defend themselves, and without a doubt .... it works. Nobody argues with someone carrying a gun.

and when the situation evolves back to "old" GB again, then change the laws to suit again .........

We expect cops to go into situations that we wouldn't do ourselves, the least we could do is give them the tools to do the job. Nowhere in europe has gun crime increased because cops are armed ......

I am not sure about our American contributor's perspective.

30 police were killed by guns in the UK in the last forty years.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_British_police_officers_killed_in_the_line_of_duty
There are about 70 killings with guns in the UK each year.

In LA 54 people were killed by the police last year and there were 600 homicides.
http://articles.latimes.com/2012/jun/10/local/la-me-cop-shootings-20120610
There are about 12000 gun related homicides in the US each year.

Moving in any way towards the American model doesn't make much sense to me.

Why, what changed your mind, if your allowed / want to elaborate :?

Also interested to hear more Taz. I can only guess that means you've sat with some jurors who don't have a second brain cell to keep the first one warm at night? Given what counts for common sense these days, I'm not sure I'd trust my peers in the general public!

What changed my mind was how hard it was to come to a decision and how easily it would be to get it wrong

All police are armed in the US. The vast majority of them will go through their entire career with out having fired a shot outside of the shooting range. Being as how I'm a concerned citizen. I will endeavor to make their job easier. All I can say is "don't burgle my house bro"

.........And we wonder why gun crime is rife in other countries. God forbid if ordinary citizens in the UK were ever allowed to own guns casually at home :x

Tim.

None of my guns have committed any crimes nor have I ever committed a crime with them. And I would certainly give the fine people of England far more credit than you just did. In Switzerland it is mandated by law to have a fully automatic combat rifle and a semi auto handgun in every able bodied mans home and the government supplies them. I went there on holiday and was not shot. Please remember that the media only shows the bad side when it comes to guns. It's not the wild west as the media portrays. I have lived in the US for 54 years now. I have never seen any one ever pull a gun on someone. I however have pulled a gun on a guy my mom was dating. As he decided to start beating her after bringing her home from a date. Completely disagree, as far as I'm concerned no member of the ordinary public should be allowed too keep firearms end of story and the last thing we need is gun ho heroes on our streets, disaster waiting to happen if it was allowed in the UK. You only have too look at some of the recent nutcase shootings across Europe and in the US. Some people who own firearms may be perfectly sane but people change and thats when the danger looms. I wouldn't want to live in any country where your average Joe Public has guns in the house. Wild west springs to mind :x

Nope all guns should be binned and melted down

Bigdog - in Switzerland, every able body person undertakes military training, so has to have a weapon. However, the ammunition is very tightly controlled - it is regularly checked and you have to account for all rounds in your possession, no excuses. Heavy jail sentences result in failing to do so.

It is still disconcerting to see people with assault rifles coming in to work though :D

.... and I'm a fan of Judge Dredd and Escape from LA - a combination of these two using the IoW would work for me

So you would happily hand over the IoW to crims, a beutiful peacefull island on the the sunny south coast, maybe we could also supply them with pedalos and free beer.
There are far more desolate collections of rocks with prevailing cold high winds and no shelter and no existing inhabitants that would need to be moved off the coast of Scotland that I think would serve the purpose better. or just adapt Liverpool, only about a third of the population would need to be relocated

Liverpool? Come on, even Ross Kemp rates Glasgow worse

Hmm I will have to concede on that one, even though Ross kemp is a tosser.

Someone did pull a baseball bat on me. Doing that to a taekwondo instructor was the last dumb thing he did for a week or so. He spent the rest of the week in hospital. (I only kicked him once :? )Thankfully I had witnesses that showed I was attacked and the boys in blue left it at that.

Whats your thoughts on any knobend who can pass a test being put in charge of a cruise missile, coz we allow thousands of them every year and they kill more people every year than guns.
Guns don't kill people, people do.
You will never rid the world of Guns, it's to late, they have been invented, it would be like trying to rid the world of the wheel, mankind has always used weapons to protect and defend, remove the gun from his hand and he will simply pick up the next best weapon.
