Armed police in the UK - discuss

I know the death penalty does not STOP crime but it does prevent reoffending and goes a long way to act as a deterrent.

It does not work as a deterrent. Read the Freakonomics chapter about the death penalty in the U.S. Or just look at the data.

Fair enough, but tell me it doesn't stop reoffending

You're right, it would have stopped all these people re-offending:

Stefan Kiszko
Stephen Downing
Barry George
Derek Bentley
Judith Ward
Winston Silcott
Suzanne Holdsworth
Angela Cannings
Sally Clark

I agree Carl, but for one thing, the Criminal would know if they have a heart condition / weak heart. do the crime and risk getting tazerd knowing you have a weak heart is your own stupid fault.

Nosa thinks I wrote something here in mistake but he is wrong.

Oh PLEASE don't go down the old innocents road, its been done to death, (no pun intended) Yes mistakes are made, yes innocents die, yes I accept that in such a society a member of my own family could end up on the gallows wrongly accused, all risks I am willing to take rather than spend millions keeping scumbags in food clothes and accomodation for years on end when they gave up their human rights by murdering other innocents.
Every government tells us their is a war on crime, in every war innocents die, in this day and age of DNA the chances of getting it wrong are less.
But please feel free wasting your time trying to convince me that your right and I am wrong, because just like the others in life who have tried you will also fail.
I am listing you under the "part of the problem" section. :P

I think the solution would be to have tougher punishments. The UK is waaay to relaxed. Easier said than done, but if you could give long or longer prison terms for minor offences it would make criminals think twice. Also, captial punishment would be nice for those that really deserve it, but that's a very complex topic...

I'm not trying to convince you of anything, just discussing. But I agree with you, trying to change your mind would be a waste of time. Please feel free to read anything you like into the points raised.

The death penalty doesn't make any sense for many reasons. It doens't prevent crime, it's not cheaper than imprisonment and it requires an infallible justice system.

Look at it another (less emotional) way: List all the counties of the world that have, and don't have the death penalty and tell me which one you'd rather live in.

USA
that was easy
anymore?

Oh and it is cheaper,

Rope £5.99 (triple ply) and its reusable (everyones a winner, well almost)
Enough 4x6 to build a gallows £250, Cheaper at costco or trade timber yard,
Labour approx £350 (this includes digging the hole to throw the carcass in)

Or we could adopt the Chineese method and just shoot them and bill the family for the bullit.

Surely that is cheaper than the stimated £30.000 PA to keep a scumbag behind bars.

What's stopping you? It seems like it would make you happier knowing the death penalty was there. Make sure to pick a state that has (and carries out) the penalty.

I tend to think that if the state is in a position to kill us it is no longer our servant and has become uor master so no thanks to the death penalty. As for arming the police, I can see the argument and sympathise, but the more guns the more chances of an accident. Plus it would be only a matter of time before some copper gets surrounded and is relieved of their weapon. Criminals are always going to have the advantage when they intend to kill an innocent. Would you expect a couple of police-persons to enter your property brandishing a gun when you had reported a buglary? Nope, the system may have failed these two but I fear that arming them wouldn't have made much difference.

Whats stopping me is that I can speak english, I am willing to work for a living and pay taxes, unfortunatly these are not prerequisates for a green card.
Also in doing so would mean turning my back on my country which for all its faults (and there are many) and it would mean that the lilly livered do gooder liberals had won.
That and I refuse to put 3000 miles between me and my Children

I am going to stop responding to you now raify as we will end up falling out and I find it difficult to this kinda crap from someone who has in their signature that they bum raped gaddafi.
I maybe wrong on this as I don't know what you do for a living but I am willing to bet you were sat in your office or arm chair when he got his, I don't hear you complaining that the death sentence was metered out on his ass.

Baffled. I actually blamed Dick Lovett Bristol for that bit of 'justice'

Indeed, I was only chatting. Which is quite hard to do on the internet.

Back on topic, no, I don't think routinely arming the police is the answer to this, or many other problems.

Was reading this
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-19644691

And saw this

PC Bone's father Paul has called for the death penalty for anyone convicted of murdering a police officer

Would anyone agree, think we know my thoughts on it already.

It's a moot point. Re-introducing the death penalty will require our exit from the European Union
