Partially I blame the insurance industry and the general risk of points for having an accident.
If it was a simple case as in mainland Europe that after a claim, you drop 20% off your no-claim discount on that car and that is the end of it. In the UK, you get hammered on any car you drive, so if you have two, both cars premium will go up as well as any cars you are a named driveer on and you are even at risk for driving without due care and receive points (not usual, but not unheard of if there is a clear case and the police happens to pass).
