are z4 doors meant to let water through?

A lot of people on here have had the dreaded interior leak due to the door membrane coming loose.

I changed mine during the week and so far so good, no leaks or damp smell after heavy rainfall.

But, it doesn't stop the water getting into the door in the first place! From what I could see when I done a hosepipe test, the water appeared to be coming through around the wing mirror baseplate area.

Is this normal? Or should the water not be allowed to get in there? I can't seem to find a definitive answer.

On another forum I use, some people were assured that I need to stop the source of the leak as it will only lead to more problems and a door full of water.

The doors have a small drain hole at the bottom, and there is a corresponding drain hole in the door rubber on the car. Water is always going to get into the door through the window seals, so the drain is what keeps everything dry.

The membrane just keeps water away from inside the door.

Usually when you open the car door after rain or washing the car, you'll see water coming out of the drain hole.

Should be bottom back corner of each door. Not seen them on the Z yet, but on the E36 they were round holes and on other models (E46 and E60 if I recall) they were small rectangular notches. Sometimes they are hidden by the rubber on the door, but I guess they must be there??

Cheers Stratts, that puts my mind at rest!

I had visions of the door filling up with water and bursting the membrane

Just need to dry the interior carpet out now!

Check the windscreen drains as well, they are more often the cause of water ingress into the cabin. When I fixed my wipers the other day, I found the drain was blocked by leaves and mud.

I checked those a few months ago and cleared alot of mud and leaves out. Think i'll do it again for peace of mind. Cheers.
