Are you saying that the sentence (now including 'and') would read:

I would have thought that 10 years ago they would have taught you that and the 1st person personal pronoun required a capital letter.

If so, then what is the first clause referring to? It would seem to reply to the post before it regarding foreign students being better trained?

If it refers to personal pronoun comment after it, I'm not sure that it works.

The comma would be appropriate were the two parts of the sentence reversed, thus:

"The 1st person personal pronoun require a capital letter, I would have thought that 10 years ago they would have taught you that".

I beg to differ, when the independent clause is placed before the dependent clause, a comma should not be used.
In this case the two clauses could be joined by using the word "and."

I have used "that" as a conjunction between the two clauses and my error was in placing the comma after instead of before the conjunction.

If I may paraphrase Oscar Wilde, "I have spent most of the day putting in commas and the rest of the day taking them out."

Err...ok!

In this context, a comma should be used to separate two clauses each of which could stand as a sentence independent of the other clause. In your sentence, no comma should be present at all!

ps You have not paraphrased, but directly quoted Oscar Wilde (more or less - he spent much of the day putting in but one comma, not a plurality)

i like the way you are all correcting each other, however, compounding it with your own errors, in doing so......

It doesn't appear, that any of you, are expert enough, to preach about, each others' mistakes..

ps I have added some errors to encourage some more of your mistakes and they are deliberate, or are they?
