Are runflats really that bad?

Coming from a Z with se suspension 17" rims with non rft into a Z with 18s M suspension and runflats I was anticipating wanting to ditch the rft straight away...

Actually they feel fine ride is decent even over the worst roads Huddersfield has to offer... At least not noticeably worse than in my old Z

Am I risking my rims and springs everytime I take the car out with these tyres or should I just keep them because I actually like the way it handles as is

Good to hear you have got it now!

I can only speak from my own experience, both of mine having Bridgestone RFT's, but I don't think they are too bad.

However some of what I have read suggests that other brands are better, so I would be interested to know what yours has fitted.

Most of the cracked rims I have seen mentioned seem to affect 19 inch (or larger) rims - presumably because there is so little sidewall!

Enjoy! :driving:

You're in the minority to find them acceptable, but if so stick with it.

I don't for 1 minute believe your suspension will break noticeably more, but with stiffer and lower sidewalls and slightly lower suspension you will subject them to more stress and strain. Just with less of the impact taken by the tyre your springs and shocks work harder

The Bridgestone run flats I had were terrible when driving over any surface other than a very smooth road.
The latest run flats may well have improved but I don't fancy paying a fortune to find out.

Full set of Bridgestone RFT's on ours and I can't see the problem with them but they do have approx. 6mm tread on which may improve the ride.

The Bridgstone runflats on mine tram-lined like hell and were very crashy. I ditched them (before I was ditched) whilst only half worn. Fitting a set of cheaper Falkens transformed the car. Interesting that you have M suspension with RFT's when the M cars come with non-RFT's.

I've got Bridgestone potenzas all round....

Maybe that the roads round here are either excellent or completely fucked no in-between really so on the good roads it would be good on any setup and the bad roads are just so bad they felt awful in the last Z so just feel the same

I've had a few BM's in my time on 18's and although firm, I've never felt the need to change them. I had a 2015 420d grand coupe m sport that's just on back (BMW family car scheme) and that was on 19's and although very firm, the ride was acceptable although given the choice I would have had 18's for comfort. I've just bought a 2010 Z4 23i Msport on 19's and the RF's will have to go because I can't live with them. They tram terribly and the crunch rattles my spine with any sort of minor pothole or even motorway cats eyes so I can see my back cracking along with the 326 wheels! To answer your question, for me on my Zed?.... They are!

The bridgestone's that my car came on were horrible.... The Michelins (still run flat) I switched too were like normal tyres.

The later bridgestones are apparently alot better - maybe thats what is fitted?, and the ones on our MINI Coupe are fine (though 17"...)

Bridgestone RE050 run flats are the worse tyres I've ever experienced, they tram lined, crashed over the slightest dump and we're unpredictable over surface changes.
Current 5 series M Sport has Pirelli Cinturato P7 run flats and there great, feel like normal tyres and glide over dumps.

My mate has 17s with the pirelli runflats on his Z and says they are great

I had fairly well worn Bridgestones on mine when I bought it - tram-lined quite a bit, changed them for Pirelli Zero's on the rear and a few months later put Goodyear Eagles on the front - (RFT's) what a difference, much better

I went from 17's with Bridgestone Potenza Runflats to 19's with conventional rubber. The difference isn't marginal or subtle despite the 2" jump in rim size and consequent drop in sidewall... smoother and better damped especially at low-mid speeds; quieter; steering is sharper (might be the sidewalls); car feels more planted in the corners. Wet grip also seems better but only been out in the wet a couple of times.

To say I'm pleased is an understatement... :-)
