Are 103 style wheels "fragile"?

I had 4 new tyres fitted last Thursday..

On Saturday I went to a wedding, on a farm, at the end of a 1 mile "track" (read that as "off-road!").

On Sunday I noticed the offside rear tyre looked flat, sure enough it was down to ~10lbs.

I pumped it up on Sunday afternoon, drove back up to work on monday morning, stopping in the services and the tyre had lost ~2lbs.

I booked back in to the tyre place that fitted the tyres and drove there an hour ago, the tyre was back down to 10lbs.

When they took the tyre off they found a (large) crack in the rim, in all honesty it would have been too big for them not to notice it last Thursday so I suspect it may have happened on the weekend.

I was VERY careful driving down that track, i don't recall any BIG bangs, just lots of little ones at less than 5MPH.

Are the 103s that brittle?

Also - anyone have a spare 103 lying around that they don't want? I have found a couple on ebay but thought I'd also ask here..

103s were fitted on my 2003 Zed when I bought it 2.5 years ago with 53,500m on the clock. Two lady owners had inflicted a fair few scuffs and scrapes on the rims but otherwise they were fine...no cracks. I stand to be corrected but I've not heard of any issues with this type of wheel.

Cool - thanks.

I haven't seen that big a crack in a wheel for quite some time. I've sourced a replacement (£150) and that'll arrive on Friday so i'll just swap the tyre over and chuck the old one in the skip
