Arch liner expanding rivet problem

Got a slight problem with the driver's side front wheel arch liner. The expanding rivet has come off so I bought a pack but after trying to put it back in, I can see there is nothing on the other side of the bumper for the rivet to expand into if that makes sense? There is a hole in the arch liner, and a hole in the bumper but nothing on the inside of the bumper to hold it all together firmly.

Looking at the area here:

It doesn't shed any light on the right part (if any :() so can anyone help :D

Not sure exactly what you mean here but the plastic expanding rivets don't exactly need anything other than the two matching holes in the seperate componets. As you push the centre 'rivet' in it expands into the two holes (and splays out slightly on the other side) and that's it.

Hmm. There was one on the other side though when I checked

I'll get a picture but there is no way that the rivet would fill the gap in the bumper as-is. Maybe the mounting or something is wrong with the bumper

Are you talking about part 10 here? Using the flap in the arch, you should be able to feel the back of it.

Yep, I bought a bag of those retainers (part 10) and on the passenger side it went in nice and tight but on the driver side although it opened out, it didn't actually grip into anything :(

If you feel the passenger side through the hole, what is there?

Is it possible that the hole on the driver side has just got too big. But why are the missing in the first place on both sides? If someone removed them, perhaps they were too rough and pulled the driver side through with plastic and all.

In that case, put a bit of plastic on the inside of the hole as you can reach it through the hole before you put the rivet in?

Not sure although it was some kind of plastic clip type thingy

I removed the passenger side as it was fairly loose. Replaced it with the new clip fine. The driver side one was visibly loose and when I put some pressure on it it just popped straight out. The driver side hole in both the arch liner and the bumper is exactly the same size as the passenger, just that the passenger side has the other bit of plastic on the inside of the bumper.

I'll whip the passenger side retaining clip off tomorrow and see if I can get the plastic bit inside to inspect! Cheers.

It was obviously removed at some stage and the plastic bit at the drivers side has fallen out.

From feeling the passenger side, how big and how solid / lose is that bit of plastic?

Hmmm... wonder if it is part 4 on here? Although it looks too small, 3 is the other option, but that sticks up too much.

Otherwise it may just be supplied on the arch. If it were me I'd probably just fabricate something - doens't look too thick. Cut and drill some plastic to size and then glue to the inside of the arch. The expaning should help hold it in place. A little Heath Robinson, but probably the easiest option

Right. Popped it into Grosvenor and they have confirmed that the driver side is missing a bit of plastic fitting. It actually fell out when they jigged the bumper around. They're going to get it all resolved and while it's in they're going to do the CDV too. Should be picking it up tomorrow failing any major blizzards.

Why were they messing with the bumper ???
I asked them to get it off and sort out the light's spacing and panel gaps while they were in there. My OCD wasn't satisfied with the less than perfect look :)

OK all sorted now. The driver side was missing part 17 from here:

They had the bumper completely off, put everything how it should be and got all the panel gaps and headlamp spacing sorted. To be honest, I could have done this myself given the time and inclination. I am not 100% happy with the panel gap between the bumper and bonnet, but to solve this I will have to move the bonnet a fraction. I'll have that sorted over the weekend if the weather holds out.

Have to say a huge huge  for Grosvenor. They really love their BMWs there and are a friendly and knowledgable bunch of people. I'll definitely be going back there for anything that needs doing outside of warranty.
