Aqua plane

Driving along earlier tonight in the rain minding my own business as you do. Hit some water, nothing unusual, and the front ends all over the place. Happened twice in the space of a mile. The car was mot’d on purchase when I bought it a couple of months back and had some budget ditch finders put on. Taurus is the name I believe. Goodyear eagle f1’s ordered to match the rears. Reading through recent posts that seems to be the tyre of choice for the Z.

Depends a lot on the speed you were travellininf and depth of water you hit - even the best rain tyre can only do so much before they give up.

The Alfa on Cross-Climates will handle much more water than the Z4M will on Supersports at the same speeds.

I almost ended up in a hedge in my RS4 when I aquaplaned on a wet country lane. The front tyres (GY Eagles) had just under 3mm of tread left, but it made the difference between cornering and floating! New tyres (again GY Eagles) fixed the problem.

was only doing 50mph and not and excessive amount of water.

I put cheaper tyres on the front last year, if £80 a tyre is cheap! Won't do it again. Not using it over winter but when I take it off Sorn, it'll get Continentals to match the rear

Standing water can easily be a couple of inches deep. Then, even at lower speeds, the water can push your tyre up away from the surface. In none standing water I would expect any modern tyre to cope with 50mph. My MPSS. Certainly can. Either the water was deeper than you thought or your tyres need changing.

I’ve ordered 2 x Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 225/40 R18 From Black Circles for £180 fitted.

I'd be really happy with that price
The tyres I bought are rubbish

Even slightly under inflated tyres will contribute to aquaplaning, cold weather also reduces pressure by 1psi per 10 deg F so it's worth re-checking cold tyre pressures this time of year.

Also the wider the tyre the lower the speed at which it aquaplanes. ( obviously the better the tyre at moving water away will counteract this) . I would also say as an ex biker that you fit the best tyres you can afford as that’s the only contact with the road.
