I had my mobile number and email on my imessenger on my ipad in ios5 too

VIP email list, interesting concept where it shows emails from certain people only. Nice touch.

Apple has replaced Google maps on all devices going forward. Reason why? Apple vs Google plain and simple, no point in putting money into your competitors pocket when you can do it (perhaps not quite as well yet) yourself. The maps in the US are better and improvement will roll out to other areas I'm sure.

Here are 2 screen shots from my iPad showing NY

That is indeed lovely. I hope they put some investment into getting more countries up to speed. Google is ok but a bit slow to update... my area was streetviewed in 2008. I saw the car the other day so I guess there will be an update at some point but once every 4 years is not great. I tend to think improvements in the sattelite date is more sustainable, so hopefully that will improve over time.

I'm a bit miffed about the map situation. I know we can use the standard map on the ipad/iphone to see roads, directions etc but detailed maps have become the norm these days. We are all used to be ale to zoom in and drop into streetview, pretty much anywhere there is a public road.
Not happy at all with their own maps. The area I live looks like the picture was taken through a wall of water.
Which technically, living in the Uk, it could have been. :)

Are the old maps not available as an App or has that been blocked?

2.5gb required? Guess this does rule the upgrade out for me, well unless I delete en masse my music and photos - Just a shame iPhones don't take removable SD cards...

I had 370mbs left on mine and it installed fine. So I would say you will be fine, does it not install over the old, so wont take up any extra space? If anything when it had finished I had a few more MBs than I had before.

Seriously your going to be pissy about google maps? If you want to use google maps use it! Its still widely available just make the googlemaps site an icon. Simples.

LOL, I thought the same... and judging by the response every time I have made a forum change it's not surprising... in general people hate change of any kind. :)

Yep, generally we're creatures of habit.

Very impressed too... if anyone is doubting the new maps app, look as central London in 3D, absolutley awesome! Only a small amount of coverage at the moment but will improve over time as they update...

Turn by turn nav is great as well... :)

I have no problem with change. I love a bit of new tech me.
It's because they change something great for something that's mostly rubbish. I know we can still get onto google maps but when you've been used to having a great map on the home screen icon then they change it for something worse it's a bit miff-inducing.
I think they should wait til they've tweaked it to at least near enough the standard of google maps before they change it.

Saying that, that's the only thing I don't like after the update. The 3d stuff is awesome on the new maps.

They haven't changed it they have stopped using it, period.

Its still available on the iPhone, and works pretty much the same and google are currently building the stand alone app, which I would say will be here very quickly. In the mean time you can make google maps an icon on your home screen and use it like the app... so there is no reason to be pissy you can still have it on your home page.

If anything it has improved the maps for the only reason I would use it... Turn by turn. Googles sucks for direction as there is no instruction. I think the concepts a winner and yes its not perfect but it will only get better with time. It has taken google years to get the app where it is with billions in investment, this is the first version. Seem to remember google maps was pretty poor at the start too.

Most things are usually that way, they get better over time as they tweak them don't they?

I know they haven't changed it per se. By change I meant changing what opens when you use the ipads 'maps' icon into something that's not up to previous standard.

I'm not getting pissy about it, I love a bit of apple me. I'm typing on an imac, I've got an ipad 2, I use my old iphone as an ipod. Only thing I don't have is a macbook but I've sorted that out ...
