I have never been able to deal with the in-ear earphones, they always seem to fall out for me.

Perhaps as you're getting on and you've grown old man ears

or the overwhelming and torrential build-up of in-ear wax that tends to occur in the over-70's.
or possibly also the draught that whips through the empty cavity of PVR's head could cause a dislodgement....
just hypothesising
