Anyway to operate the roadster roof while moving???

Hi, Does anyone know if there is a way to modify the Z4 to allow you to operate the roof while moving?

I used to have a 987 Boxster and I could operate the roof up to 31mph, my friend had a 986 boxster which did not, but there was a 'fix' where you modified a fuse by removing a single pin, then hey presto, he could operate the 986 roof while moving.

Obviously the Z4 roof motor probably isnt designed for this, but I'd imagine if you were sensible and only used it at slow speeds, taking the roof down would be fine, possibly have to be more careful putting it up I would imagine...

Any info would be appreciated, Thanks.

You can install a seperate 3rd party module but they're fairly rare - cost is about £80 depending on the source. Reinhold is the usual manufacturer.

:lol: Clearly conflicted!

If you start putting to roof down when parked you can pull away (slowly) as it's on the way down... although I only do that once it's cleared the rollover bars. For some reason I prefer to be stationary when putting it up. Also, don't forget when you've got those nice looking hood covers on :poke:

Why would you want to lower/raise your roof whilst moving? I always feel it looks a bit odd when people do that.I think it makes you look like either a show off or a bit of a tw*t. Didn't know ours could be configured do do it though, shan't be doing mine,I look enough of a tw*t without that......... :D
 
I know there is a unit for the 3 series that can do this, but dont know of anyone that has it on the Z. Im sure i remember someone posting a link to a company that make them but it wasn't reinhold.

Would be useful if the heavens opened and you couldnt pull over. I've seen Porsches doing it and it would certainly come in useful from time to time.
 
Thanks all, I'll contact Reinhold and see what they say.

The function is V useful, especially living near the Lake District, where it showers on and off a lot on certain days, I'd rather look like a tw*t on the move rather than pulling over all the time, where people tend to laugh at the poseur in the convertible who is getting a bit wet - lol

I am not overly confilcted, well, maybe a little :roll: The MKII CRX is my favouraite car of all time - sad I know but it was just 'the car' when I was young and just getting to be a petrol head...

In terms of Boxster 'v' Z4, thats a difficult one, the Boxster had 285bhp compared to the 214bhp in the 2.5, so was obviously a lot quicker. The boxster was also much more expensive, think I paid £44k all told with a few options. If I am completely honest, and all my Z4 owning friends out there might not like it, but the boxster is on balance the better car (I've driven the Z4 3.0si but not the ///M). The noise of the boxster engine just behind your head is fantastic, the road manners are superb (as is the Z4 but the boxster is just more settled and confident on the limit), my boxster had 19" alloys and it held the corners like on rails, but it was also sooooo smooth, even on rough roads, some kind of magical porsche suspension going on, the Z4 is quite crashy on the rough stuff in comparison.

That said, I prefer the Z4, why? I love the Z4's looks, its a fantastic car (80% of the boxster?) and the Z4 is 100% owned/mine - the porsche was on hire purchase and I just couldn't justify the expense each month, so I got rid and bought the Z4 outright, must be getting older and slightly more sensible....

Interesting comparison between the two, thanks. One of the things which put me off the Boxster, apart from the extra cost, was the cost and ease of servicing. How did you find it?

roof down on a road.. small rain shower kicks in... stop at red light, start roof up... light goes green.. now who looks like a tw*t? the guy holding all the traffic at the light whilst his roof goes up.. or the guy who can start driving away as it goes up, holding no-one up? :P

To be honest I only had the car for one minor service, nothing went wrong with it ever and the service was around £300, might of even been slightly less. That said, if things do go wrong the Porsche dealers are very expensive indeed so I can see where you are coming from.
 
Hi all, I've just had a reply from Reinhold, they don't make such a module, however, I found this on ebay:

I contacted the company and they say that it does work for the older Z4's...... I've asked them to double check that because the advert doesn't say it does....e89 only.

Anyway £350 is a little on the steep side I think :(
