Hi

There's a 57 plate Z4 coupe not too far from me that I'm tempted to take a look at over the weekend. It's done 85k miles, which I know isn't a huge deal as these cars are generally quite reliable but is there anything I should be specifically looking out for? What should have typically been replaced by this sort of mileage?

Just want to make sure I'm prepared and going in with my eyes open! Any advice welcome

Listen out for the HVA's (do a search on here as there are a few vids).

Other than that, just check the SH.

It must have fsh and brake fluid change at the right times within a month or 2 is fine
Listen to the engine if it sound healthy test drive and go thro the motions gear change how does the clutch feel ect ect

When i was looking at cars at this sort of mileage i was saying to myself keep £500 back for a service if not done recently and water pump belts brakes ect mainly just wear and tear items
I drove 2 around this sort of mileage
Both i drove felt strong and pulled really well didnt go for them in the end as the sellers just wanted to much money and no deal could be done

Don't get distracted by the soft-top brigade before you go see it; they'll be along here in a minute!
Condition and SH are the obvious ones. Prolly price too but I'm sure you'll have that covered.

Cheers for the advice guys.

Going to try and have a look at it/take it for a test drive on Sunday.

It's advertised @ £9750, 57 plate 85k miles (independent dealer) - spec is: sport, metallic black, black leather, piano black interior, heated seats, business hifi, 6CD changer, bluetooth with phone prep, xenons, PDC.

Apparently is has FSH and is fully serviced but need to check that out on Sunday (as well as if things like brakes will need doing soon). Does the price seem reasonable if the car is decent or a bit much?

I would have said that's the right price for that spec and miles at the moment.
There are a lot asking more than that

85k miles, most (if not all) rubber bushes will need to re replaced ( not in the service book) otherwise it will drive like a wet blanket. Can be very exy if you can't swing a spanner yourself. Also at 85k I would think both suspension springs and struts will be mostly shot..
Just something to keep in mind.

I would say this isn't true, it depends how the car is treated and worth baring in mind. If the cars handling is a little wooly this is worth baring in mind and worth having a quick shifty round.

Obvious things to point out is tyres and brakes, make sure pads and discs have plenty of meat also tread they can all be items you can bater with.

Mechanically the Z should be fine its the interior, they wear so bolsters on drivers seat, make sure all plastic components like cigarette tray works, glove compartment. The manual doesn't fit perfectly in the glove box so can get broken by slamming etc. Multi function steering wheel the plastic around the buttons can wear and is a pain to replace.

The sills can also get a bit shabby from stones more toward the rear rather than the front but both will be affected at that milage.

Just obvious stuff really.

Yer, you might say it's not true, but then your probably driving a wet blanket and happy with it ;P at any rate, it's stuff to budget for. It depends if your happy with so so.. ;)

Remember that a lot of the common issues BMWS suffer such as water pump failure are age related as well as due to mileage, the cooling system on any 5+ year old BMW is worth giving a thorough check over regardless of how many miles are on the clock. Plastic and rubber degrade over time.
