If there is no room from that panel then you might have to remove the air vents, then the radio to get at it from above.
Never done it so that's pure conjecture, however If I get time this evening I'll look in the TIS manual and see if it gives any detail or removal and replacement procedures.
Speaking to a local breakers he's looking for £200+ ($400) for a second hand unit with the shiny buttons, so it's no cheap mod, even if it can be made to work.

So am i right in saying you want someone with nice aircon controls to swap with you for your basics controls?

That was my read on the idea Paul, but just ignored that as a 'no hope idea' and the posts moved onto sourcing a replacement, switching buttons, etc. However if there is anyone desparate to have the old look - put me in the line for the new one too....

Comparing the back of this auto one, and a non auto one, the plugs seems to look the same (although at a different position)

remove two screws under the radio and push hard on the climate control to remove

well hello "paulN" and "cj10jeeper" i know its just so funny i figured there may just be someone out there that doesnt really care about that kinda feature and maybe could use a lil extra cash in there pocket!!! I know its wild thinkin but what the hell you never know someone could do it 
so laugh all you want ill just laugh with ya and hope that someone roles along with a unit to swap!

CJ - where is your car from? It does not sound UK spec, as you had the door open light which the UK spec did not have, you now do not have the automatic airco which all UK spec 3.0 cars had. Was the car imported?

excellent - ~I ned to look closely at a quad exhaust for the next project (which of course I'm not even thinking about or contemplating in any way doing - just looking...lol)
traxxer - I'd agree cannot believe for 1 minute that you could put a different functionality switch in and in any way expect it to work. Of course pure guesswork but I would assume there is more to auto aircon than just the switch, the wiring loom is likely different as would be the terminating plugs and some other components in the heating/aircon/ventilation set up. even if it is cheaper and quicker for manufacturers to use common parts.
Swapping like for like functionality from black to shiny switches I'd take a gamble on working
