hi,

i'm just curious if anyone uses redline oils for their M54 engine-ed Zeddies? or oils other than mobil-1 and BMW castrol? like motul perhaps?

i was a mobil-1 user but reports on the internet abt the downgrade in base stock used, from a Grp IV to a Grp III, has worried me a little. i've now converted and used amsoil 5w-40 european formula for my last oil change. no complaints so far with that oil but i've heard so much abt redline oils that i might want to give that a go. motul sounds pretty good as well.

any first hand accounts of the above oils would be much appreciated.

thanks

Alot of Oils are not that great, there are alot of myths and pre conceptions regarding OEM fluids, you need to remember that BMW are a business and any oils they promote or recommend will be recommended based on the commercial agreement they have in place, not about what's best. I'm not saying the OEM stuff is shite, i'm saying there are better. I have used Redline, it's decent gear but there is better IMO, I have used Motul, Silkolene, Valvoline, Castrol, Redline and the only thing I have ever found that does the job perfectly is Royal Purple. It's American but over here it's starting to make a decent name for itself. 1/2 of the F3 field run it, 2 of the BTCC BMW's run it, 95% of all the racing BMW's I know run it, quite simply the stuff is superb and if you were going to change from OEM this is what I would use, in fact it is what I use in my Z4M and runs sweet as a nut :)

thanks for the tip taffy!

i intend to use royal purple in my diff and perhaps my manual tranny as well when the time comes to do some preventive maintenance, but i didn't consider RP for my engine as i've heard that the motor oil isn't a pure synthetic blend? perhaps you could shed some light on what kind of base stock they use in their motor oils?

taffy, any comments on Lucas Oil? i heard it's good stuff, but as you said (and i agree), a lot of it is marketing

I am new to the Z but I have been using Amzoil in my truck and wife's cars for about 13 years now.

My truck uses Amzoil 0w30. The Z uses Amzoil 5w30 and the Honda uses 5w30.

I put Amzoil in my truck at 5000 miles. Never before that or your piston rings won't seat properly.

My truck was my daily driver (until my Z4). 26 miles each way to work. 175K on this vehicle, about 15K off roading.....
I change the oil every 10 months and the filter (with an Amzoil filter) every 5K miles. At 170K I have no appreciable wear on the engine. I have the oil analyzed every 6 months.
I did a compression check at 150K. All cylinders were in still in the upper levels of the spec. and all cylinders were within 2% of each other. I never have to add oil. It just does not burn any.
My truck also suffered from the famous ( or infamous) Ford piston slap. After Amzoil, no more piston slap.... You can read reams of data on the F-150 forums about this problem.....

Before I changed out the transfer case and differentials with Amzoil, every time I put it in four wheel drive, you could feel it engage and hear a noticeable 'thunk'. After Amzoil, nothing, smooth as silk.

The performance of this oil keeps me using it.......

I have heard some really good things about Royal Purple though.....

Haven't used Lucas Oils so couldn't comment, i've been racing BMW's for nearly 5 years, tracking them for 8 or so, I have used all the major oils, race and road and have problems with them all in 1 variety or another, I then got put onto Royal Purple in late 2004 by someone who is considered to be the UK's best BMW race engine builder and since trying it out have not used anything since. I have always sampled all my fluids after each race and since using the RP the wear on bearings and many other parts reduced significantly. I don't believe in any of the marketing hype, I believe in experience and that is why I and most of the BMW teams in the Uk use RP and only RP, think you'll find most of the TVR boys do as well, top gear
