Anyone use petrol additives?

Hi all, following on my discussion with mr wilks regarding my emission light coming on again,i am wondering if any z4 owners use petrol additives regularly, and what you think of them?-thanks

I have considered using one to clean out the engine and associated pipage Andy - just never got round to it... And keep forgetting which one to get

I am not sure you need to use them very often though - once a year or so ? Someone will be along soon who knows

I used Red X in my old 3.0 when it failed an MOT on emmisions. Mechanic told me to add it then go for an extended hack before returning later that day for retest and ommisions pass. Apparently if you dont use the car much or for longer runs then this stuff helps. Think its supposed to help with fuel economy too.

Yep - use it every three months or so - one tank, redex injector cleaner. Always use the shell v-power exclusively as well.

Have you thought about TerraClean, Andy? IIRC about £70 to clean out your cars system, may be worth looking in to?

Thanks mate-is that the one that Edd China used on Wheeler Dealers a while ago?

& when you have fettled the fuel system move on to oil choice  in particular Millers Nano which i read about in Autocar mag a few months back . . magical stuff it would seem but at £70 for a 5 litre change it would have to be http://www.millersoils.co.uk/nanodrive.asp
what you gotta ask yourself is "how much do i love my Zed ? " :)
£70 don't sound bad

Isn't that the norm to keep up with the traffic? :poke:

I've used it once or twice in the zed.... but more of a preventive measure than anything else.

Also use V-Power which I reckon is equivalent to using cleaner/additive

I gave mine a dose of BG 44K in a full tank of fuel a couple of thousand miles ago. Seems to work. Recommended to give it a dose every 10,000 miles.

I used STP injector cleaner on my Scirocco, I was told not to go near redex but quite a few forum members and also told to use the stuff when I was low on fuel rather than on a full tank as it has a greater effect.

It helped the smooth running of my engine, decreased pinking of the tappets and also helped fuel economy all in the short term. Long term however I needed to have the timing reset to get the best running for the car.

Later on in my ownership of the vehicle I again used STP injector cleaner when I had rust in the fuel tank, this again helped the engine run better but ultimately I had to remove any such metallic deposits.

I hasten to add I used STP injector cleaner in addition to Vpower fuel for best results on a 20+ year old 4 stroke, 16v VW injection engine with unknown mileage (100k plus im sure).

I wouldnt presume I'd need to use it on a zed as the engines /vehicles are 20 years newer technology, newer lifewise and should be able to deal with all the above easily.

Yep - there's quite a few garages around that have the system.... Just googled TerraClean and hull, shows Salisbury Garage ?

I put a full bottle of Redex into an empty tank and added 10 litres of Tesco premium 99 Ron. This is a much stronger concentration of Redex than on the bottle but the car felt like it was way UP on power. Idle was smoother, pull away was smooth and it pulled lke a train. Could be the higher Ron fuel or the Redex, but it changed the car immediately! Once I use the 10 litres up I'll top up with the premium fuel again and see if it continues to feel as frisky
