Anyone running on nitrogen in their tyres

I have just had nitrogen put in my tyres at ATS. Pressure stays set for much longer due to larger atom size (accoeding to the blurb)

Never seen the point myself for road tyres, particularly if you check the pressures regularly (which you should always do no matter what gas is in). The main reason it's used in Motorsport is the ease at which water content can be controlled compared to normal air, and it's like of fire hazard compared against pure oxygen (which you wouldn't want in a tyre).

You are much more likely to get a tiny leak from a valve or rim than you ever would through a tyre.

If it's no cost difference I wouldn't object, but you'll quickly dilute the next time you play with pressures and end up topping up.

A few details here:http://www.tyresave.co.uk/nitrogen.html

Very little 'facts' on either side of the argument though, which indicates to me it's only worth it if you think it is...

I generally go with a mixture of about 79% nitrogen, 20% oxygen, and 1% carbon dioxide, argon and other trace gasses

Same here. Its bloody hard work and involves a lot of different gas cylinders. If only there was an easier way!

My dealership is doing it to all the new cars and charging $50 or so, but no one has nitrogen to top with and I'm not making an appointment for THAT. I'll stick to my normal mixture....

I did have "pure" nitrogen as that's what the mobile tyre fitted I used puts in as standard...

  Well said and for all those that are paying for this at 100% nitrogen content :crazydude:

How about going for the helium alternative. I hear it lightens the car by up to 10% thus improving acceleration and top speed.

Sounds completely pointless! Question I would ask myself is would I notice any difference by having nitrogen filled tyres..... No!

I read that the nitrogen molecules are larger and don't bleed out as fast as the oxygen and co2, if this is the correct, then surely if we overfilled by 22% and then wait a few months or years the tires will end up at the correct pressure and be filled with almost pure N2 .

Thats rubbish, it does increase the fuel economy slightly by reducing the unsprung weight though!

Not rubbish. I also believe in tartan paint, sky hooks and in Wales making a World Cup final (last one might be pushing the realms of belief!)

Dont forget left handed screw drivers glass hammer and send your mate down to your local store for a long weight

wales world cup final against England yep your right pushing the realms

Yea . . . I use hydrogen. Lighter than air and if I crash, it will be one huge explosion :fuelfire: like the Hindenburg . . . :D Z4 Pilot
