Does anyone play piano/keyboard here? I bought a basic Yamaha keyboard (61-key) last month, and start learning to play from reading book/internet.

Do I really have to take proper lesson/exam (Grade 1/2) before I can play most pop songs?

I played for a few years when I was younger. Got to a reasonable level.

Depends how quickly you can pick it up, as it is possibly the hardest musical instrument to play, as you use both hands, and read both bass and treble whilst playing at the same time.

To play pop songs comfortably, without errors is a difficult task. But if you stick with it, you'll get there. I would advise lessons (but exams aren't really needed) if you want to get to a good level

i am trying to learn the sax, is the keyboard harder than that?

my mind and fingers don't work togeather :headbang:

If any more zed owners with musical talent come forward you could form a band at one of the meets!(struggle to get a piano in a zed tho :) )

I used to have a keyboard many years ago and pretty much taught myself before I started music classes at school. Can you read music ksher?

Taz, when I read you first comment I thought it said you were learning sex :?

I have to "translate" the sheet music into notes, i.e. ABCDEFG. I am still at very early stage, and cannot read and play a new song at the same time. I practise scales with both hands every day though. My left hand is not as good as my right hand (it is really different from typing), the left can only play simple notes.

I really like the sound from piano. I may invest more on a proper digital piano (£800) when my skill reaches a certain level.

I can do all of the right notes... ... just not necessarily in the right order! (to quote Eric Morecambe).

With Piano it really is the case of practice makes perfect! Sounds like you're doing all the right things

Taz, always wanted to learn the sax,
piano only took in younger years and only thing i took away from it was how to read music, playing the bass and reading tab though made me lazy, but now a days coming from my views as a bagpipe instructor lessons are the best place to make sure you don't make mistakes. The worst thing is to learn something improper through the quick way, then spend a life time trying to break bad habits, this can be said for anything from the theme of the music piece to physical technical deliverance.
