Anyone know approx cost of roof motor replacement?

Hi, it looks like the motor or pump or whatever is gone. The other day it opened fine but when closing the roof it took extra long, it moaned and groaned and then stopped halfway. I managed to get it shut. Now if I try opening the roof it looks like it unlatches and then nada. My car is out of BMW warranty so it's possible I will have to pay for it. I bought it from an independent dealer that has some kind of insurance based warranty that covers the engine & transmission for 1 year. I will try to get them to pay for it but worst case I will have to foot the bill. So the question is, has anybody had this done (non warranty) and what sort of cost is involved?

Secondly, if I go the manual operation route, will the latch / unlatch part still work automatically or do I have to use the allen key to lock / unlock the roof. If that aspect still works automatically (powered) then I'm not too bothered if I have to manually pull or push the roof into the desired position. I don't however want to be sitting in the car with an allen key in my hand as I open or close the roof.

ps - we have had heavy rains recently and I am guessing that it's a case of water collecting up near the motor as many others have reported.

Worth a try perhaps? I don't think BMW would part with their money without good reason - maybe there is one we don't know.

Price of the repair for the water collection design error from BMW? Had my electrical roof motor replaced two months ago, and the price was 1400,- euro. Now, I'm living in Norway. You may have it cheaper in Spain, but I think this is in the area of what you should expect.
 
You would think they could make much better drainage systems on cars, increase their size and provide easily 'cleanable' systems??

They must do this to make a small fortune after sales - I had a TT roadster and eventually sold it because of the cost and frustration of trying to have the drainage fixed. Even though the pipes were completely replaced it still leaked. Audi charged me £400 just to tell me that the tubes needed replaced (apparently it costs the price of a medium speced laptop to strip the hood down).

If I finally get a Z4 I'll be checking it with a hose before hand!
 
I've had my hydraulic roof motor replaced under warranty on my '05 and I actually dug up the receipt hoping that they'd show the retail price, but no luck.

Perhaps call your dealer and reference this along with labor:

Last night I had to see a car dealer client of mine, he deals in top end sports cars and had a quick look, he thinks it might just be a hydraulic issue (maybe out of fluid? / something repairable) and perhaps not too expensive to repair. He is going to arrange for his mechanic to take a look. Once I've had it looked at I'll report back as I am pretty sure more people are going to have to go through this after their warranty runs out :(

I bought the car from an independent dealer less than 6 months ago and it came with a 12 month warranty. I spoke to the owner of the dealership and he was totally unhelpful and had a really unpleasant tone on the telephone. It was like hey it's your problem now, I'll do whatever the law requires me to do and that's it, where's the goodwill? I hate it how they are so friendly when they are ready to take your money and then just don't give a cr#p once they have the money and the deal is done :x If he doesn't help out I am going to blitz the net with information about how unhelpful the dealer was to teach him a lesson and to give a heads up to potential new customers (god bless the internet!)

Going thru the process, dealer wants 650 for motor, remove and reinstall top, 700, replace hoses (recommended by dealer, 500, so all in all 2-3 grand! Wow! Remove motor yourself, posts are available on this site, re-lube motor with diesel oil or wd40 ( mine worked after wd40) . Motor replacement if needed, 100. Probably don’t need to replace the hydraulic pump which is the top part of the assembly . That part with motor is 300-600 on eBay.
Pump removal is a bit of a pia but good instructions on line. I cut my hydraulic cables by accident but can splice back together for 150. Put pump in trunk when done.
Worst case as long as the in the top linkage are good, about 650 if you do all labor yourself and not have to remove top( you can do that too but not necessary). Just read over the posts on roof motor relocation and follow all suggestions! I could have got pump out much easier with a dremel and hack saw blade.

I take it you can still drive the car if you get stuck halfway through relocating the motor? I’m using mine as a daily...
 
For someone who knows what they are doing its a half hour job. Cost around £200 including a new motor if needed (which is often isn't)
 
I’ve been lambasted as a smarty pants but it amazes me how many people just dash off a reply to something without perusing the thread / detail.. :tumbleweed:

I can forgive it in a Facebook type format but on the the Forum you would think people would read twice before replying...especially in a longer thread.... :thumbsup: :D

The guys on phones are some of the worst as they lack the screen space to get the context often..

Maybe they don’t have all the time in the world...

I know I’ve done it too.. :headbang:
 
Well it’s thanks to this thread that I’ve started relocating my roof motor today, don’t think the original date is relevant sometimes....
