Anyone know anything about drills? A 108 related question!

So, I was thinking of buying myself one of these:

I've been going at it by hand and whilst i'm kind of getting the desired result, i have literally sanded down half my fingers in the process. Plan would be attack with the sanding drum, go by hand with finer grade stuff, paint inside, polish outer lip.

Now the drill is quite expensive for what I'll use it for, but I'm sure it will last a while, and I'll be able to use it for other DIY tasks when I get my own house :)

Any thoughts?
 
Have done the same 108 route & a drill is the way forward :) & i'l save you £50 straight off 8) Makita used to be good gear but now its cheapened its products i stay well clear of them , The chucks are nasty !
I have a Dewalt 18v but also have a Hitachi & use both on a daily basis at work .

Ps / Are you planning to paint them with rattle can's ?
 
I've heard good things about Makita :)

My dad has some dewalt stuff and he's pretty happy with it all.

Yeah would be rattle cans. etch/high build primer, then some sort of colour that is still to be determined for the basket and star, and possibly polish the outer lip and laquer it.
 
Makita used to be great but I am now replacing with Hitachi when something dies. Not that I think a cordless is really necessary for your task. I would consider a cheap corded variable speed drill and buffing mops. Depending on the abrasive qualities, you can polish pretty much anything with rouge.

Rattle can's may get you a decent finish for yourself but If you plan to sell the wheels on at some point then my advice would be to have them pro finished 8)
Decent etch,paint & lacquer will add up to £50 or so ?
Makita /Hitachi / Dewalt ? Go for whichever you fancy , I use my 2 daily for hours on end ( self employed joiner ) & after having all the 3 over long periods of time i would buy Hitach then Dewalt & leave the Makita till last , other's may disagree ,

As for why I'm going cordless, we live in a flat and our garage has no electricity: ( Sad times.

That's 50 quid per wheel right? I reckon I can get a good finish if I take my time over it :)

No , £50ish should do all 4 , some guys on the 911uk forum have used & recommend Wurth products

If you factor in the tools , materials , time etc then £200 for powder coating them doesn't sound so bad ? Unless its something you really want to do :wink:

I refurb's my 108's used a prepping wheel with my basic drill.

Total cost inc buying the star bits and pads was £70.

In hindsight should have paid someone to do it... As it was messy / dusty etc... But was satisfying seeing the work i did!

That being said my lacquer is absolutely destroyed after 1 winter and they will need redoing next winter.

How many prep wheels did you get through?

Just went and bought the hitatchi. Looks good so far. Charging the first battery. 22 min quick charge would have been nice :) I'll just have to be patient!

Yeah seen the Porsche forum, his wheels looked pretty good after the wurth stuff. Will post some piccys when i make some progress.
 
I did my 108's in a similar way, drill and surface disk (Similar to Oakley disk) hours then spent with detail sander getting surface down, some filler on the really bad bits, etching primer and filler primer to get smooth surface, wet and dry by hand to finish, colour primer, colour paint and several coats of lacquer, do they look nice, yes from a distance, could I sell them - probably not, was it worth it - probably not , would I do it again NO!.

Pretty much sum's up my 108 refurb :oops: approx 12/14 hours . £60/£70 spent on materials & at the end only a finish i would accept temporary .
Sold em on the bay advertised as "look ok from the local bus going past but requires pro refurb to be near their best " :roll:
A guy from Romania bought them for £240 & a relative collected them :thumbsup:

where did you bring her/the 108's from?
 
The Hitachi seems to be doing the job nicely :) slow progress but I'm ok with that. It's as much about the project as anything though :) something to do! They're spare wheels that I bought so can take my time over it.

Prep wheels are pretty cool.

Slow progress indeed, took me months over the winter when things just got too cold and I wasn't allowed to work on them in the house. Mine were meant to be winter wheels and a cheap finish was OK. However I damaged a tyre on the car and had to put winter tyres on the standard wheels, so now have summer tyres on the 108's. They'll be going on soon so we'll see what they look like.

i renovated a couple of very rusty lanterns last year using these - they worked well, i stripped the brass finish off the corroded brass letterbox too - and it cam up well

Yeah I went at one of the wheels with an angle grinder and a wire wheel. Stripped all the crap off in no time. Going to take a reasonable amount of sanding to get it smooth again mind :P
