Anyone installed an engine start button?

I'd just rather no need to flip an additional switch, or have it as an "at-risk" item in the setup.
The immobilizer is ideal because it guarantees (as well as anything can) that the car can't be stolen.

The perfect scenario, though I haven't the slightest clue how to do it, would be to have the RFID card automatically lock/unlock the car as you approach or walk away, and then once you're in, you just hit the button.

I know some newer cars have it, which means it's definitely possible... Just not within my expertise on how to do it; yet.

The immobiliser would still be able to work as you would still use the key to lock / unlock the car. Setting off / on the immobiliser as well.
I'm sure there are different shape "keys" that can be coded for the Z. Just code one that has no "key" and simply have a fob / card with the buttons on

You still need to keep that passenger airbag light plugged-in, or else you'll get a permanent airbag warning light in the dash. There's enough room under the console trim to secure it.

I already have the super annoying airbag light on and the thing just won't clear. I am still trying to figure out how to clear it, as I have used INPA and it gives me a error regrading communication with the module. I can keep that passenger airbag light plugged in, but where under the console trim can I secure it?

Thanks for the reply!

if your going to do this swap out the starter button with the one from the 1 series so it looks stock... that one looks like something you would find on an arcade machine IMO

Haha you're right, but that button is used in the 3 series and the 5 series. I think it looks pretty stock. I just hate the stupid fake red button this chinese kit comes with. The starter button from the 1 series is just way too hard to find.

You can do the RF imobiliser thing as i looked into this for my westfield. i think TOAD did one.

also consider that the imobiliser may not be activated by the cetral locking it seems that way but inface is a proxinity thing though the actual key.

not sure how you would bypas the ignition switch tho im guessing at some sort of rf based multi relay.

I wouldnt put all stages of the ignition switch onto one switch tho you wouldnt be able to use the radio without the whole car being on. (fords allow you to use the radio without the keys in the car)

thinking as i type im wondering if the ignition button is more than just a push to make button, if its connected to a little black box that turns on various relays accoring to timed presses. I recall in my mates new 5 series that he taped the button once to have the radio on while we were outside the chippy. i doubt it will be hard to mimik but maybe expensive.

also consider your isnurance when removing the keys they might not like it.

Anyone going to be doing this?
I am very tempted!! I've got 2 switches ready for ignition, 1 BMW stop start button so it looks OEM.
Just gotta get to it!
Only thing I'm worried about is the key not being able to charge up with no barrel in.
Any other way of charging the key without having it in the ignition?
I won't be cutting any wires so will be able to go back to stock at any time.

If you remove the complete ashtray unit, you'll find there is plenty of space to tape the light switch in the area around the hole where it was inserted. As for your airbag light, check this other thread were I received the info I needed to reset:

read the last 3 posts on it.

I heard someone mention on a thread fairly recently that a charger for an electric toothbrush worked..?

That would be super! My thought was the apple charge mats you can get. I guess the toothbrush charger works in the same way!
My wife would think I was crazy!
I can see it now...
Me "hey can I borrow your tooth brush charger this evening?"
Wife "what's up with yours?"
Me "it's charging mine"
Wife "so why do you need mine?"
Me "um... I need to charge my car key!"

Think I may attack this then
Week after Christmas I've been allowed (by Mrs Mace!) a couple of days "play time" with the Z :D
Looking forward to this one

Did this to an 87 supra I had. Where the starters are located on the mk3 the wiring harnesses to the starter get fouled and gunked up with crap so it was an easy fix instead on replacing wire harnesses. For the life of me though can't remember gauge of wire and fuses I used. On supraforums.com was where I got the info when I did it.

Anyone aware of how the immobiliser works with the ignition? Is it fed via contact with the barrel or is it proximity? If that makes sense?!

I thought this was a great video!!!!!
2 Aussies show you how to install a start button and also let you know their thoughts on the mod!

This is how I think I want to get this working like... Less the barrel

As a late Christmas preset I may be getting one of these and see if it works well! I'm happy to give it a punt at that price!
